Karl Andrew C Fake It Till You Make It – A Delightful Rom-Com with a Moral Twist Sosyal Climbers (2025), directed by Jason Paul Laxamana, is a Filipino romantic comedy that takes a playful yet meaningful dive into ambition, deception, and the struggle for a better life. Starring Maris Racal and Anthony Jennings, the film follows Jessa and Ray, a struggling couple who, after being scammed, assume fake identities to infiltrate high society and con the wealthy. But as their lies pile up, so do the moral dilemmas that test their relationship. 1. A Winning Pair: Maris Racal & Anthony Jennings Racal and Jennings are no strangers to the screen, and their performances here only solidify their reputation as reliable, compelling actors. Maris brings an infectious energy to Jessa, making her both charming and relatable, while Anthony’s natural charisma and depth give Ray the emotional weight he needs. Their chemistry is effortless, making the romance in this rom-com feel authentic and engaging. 2. A Familiar Story with a not so Fresh Twist No, the plot isn’t groundbreaking—this isn’t a film that will revolutionise the genre. But what it does well is capture the everyday struggles of the working class with subtle creativity. The dilemma between love and financial security is well-written, and while the film leans heavily on humour, it doesn’t shy away from the reality of socio-economic pressures. It’s an entertaining watch that also serves as a cautionary tale—because let’s be real, scammers are everywhere. 3. A Fun, Feel-Good Watch (With a Few Hiccups) The film strikes a great balance between comedy and drama, offering plenty of laugh-out-loud moments while tugging at the heartstrings. That said, the middle portion does drag a bit, with some predictable scenes that slow the pacing. Thankfully, Racal and Jennings’ strong performances keep things afloat, making it easy to stay invested in their journey. If you’re looking for a lighthearted, feel-good rom-com for a weekend night in, Sosyal Climbers is a solid choice. It has a heart and good intentions of two people in love wanted to fulfill their dreams but trapped in a bad situation. The story is very relatable and providing cautions to all people out there.
