Whelan Barzey Time Out If anything, Soul is guilty of over-ambition. The wizardry and wit are there, but it lacks Pixar’s usual deftness in making complex themes sing for youngsters. Rated: 3/5 Jul 25, 2023 Full Review Stephen Romei The Australian What follows is an absolute delight. It will make any viewer cherish the life they have and want to live it more fully, every single day, ideally with lots of laughs along the way. Rated: 4/5 Feb 13, 2021 Full Review Kambole Campbell Hyperallergic It shortchanges itself at every turn by overextending itself. Feb 8, 2021 Full Review Francesca Steele iNews.co.uk It is a little scattergun in its approach, and the ontology may be a bit much for kids, but even they will relate to its message about appreciating life’s smaller pleasures, which this year feels like a good one. Rated: 4/5 Dec 10, 2024 Full Review Diana Tuova Spotlight on Film A hectic, but wonderful celebration of life, and a moving animated ode to New York City’s jazz scene. Rated: 4/5 Aug 23, 2024 Full Review Gautam Sunder The Hindu The studio’s first feature to frontline black characters is a stunning work of animation, with an important message to kids and adults alike. Andrew T Disney and Pixar hit it outta the ballpark with the 2020 film "Soul", which features a poignant outlook on life and how we should not waste time thinking what we're gonna do with it and just live it out to our fullest. The animation, which perfectly blends photorealistic detail in New York City and surreal, 2D-esque visuals in the astral planes, is incredible and some of Pixar's best CGI in recent years. The comedy is also very funny and occasionally pokes fun at the very concept of living, all while providing insight as to why we even exist. The jazz-inspired soundtrack is also very significant, as the music feels uplifting and gives off a psychedelic sort of vibe, all while being central to the main character, Joe Gardner, an African-American jazz musician and band teacher. This one is a banger that will pull at your heart strings and make you rethink your own life. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/21/25 Full Review Tyler S The best Pixar movie ever. The most beautiful and important message. Truly a must-see. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/08/25 Full Review alan g Another exclusionary disnee movie. According to disnee, white people either don't exist or don't count. Tiny Fehh is horrible as usual. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/02/25 Full Review Desiree J This movie is so deep and beautiful. I always walk away feeling like I need to change my life. I mean I never do, but the impact is real 😆 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/28/25 Full Review Drew F Not sure why it took me so long to watch this one. It’s a great story about the meaning of life. Reminder to live each day to its fullest. Must watch. Loved it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/20/25 Full Review Alexander S Pixar’s Soul breathes new life into its stunning animation, elevating it to new heights.
