Whelan Barzey Time Out If anything, Soul is guilty of over-ambition. The wizardry and wit are there, but it lacks Pixar’s usual deftness in making complex themes sing for youngsters. Rated: 3/5 Jul 25, 2023 Full Review Stephen Romei The Australian What follows is an absolute delight. It will make any viewer cherish the life they have and want to live it more fully, every single day, ideally with lots of laughs along the way. Rated: 4/5 Feb 13, 2021 Full Review Kambole Campbell Hyperallergic It shortchanges itself at every turn by overextending itself. Feb 8, 2021 Full Review Francesca Steele iNews.co.uk It is a little scattergun in its approach, and the ontology may be a bit much for kids, but even they will relate to its message about appreciating life’s smaller pleasures, which this year feels like a good one. Rated: 4/5 Dec 10, 2024 Full Review Diana Tuova Spotlight on Film A hectic, but wonderful celebration of life, and a moving animated ode to New York City’s jazz scene. Rated: 4/5 Aug 23, 2024 Full Review Gautam Sunder The Hindu The studio’s first feature to frontline black characters is a stunning work of animation, with an important message to kids and adults alike. Doron G Disney's greatest movie, and one of the only movies in the world that nails what African-American culture actually is Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/08/24 Full Review Jay W Pete Docter is now officially my favorite Pixar director. His filmography includes "Monsters Inc", "Up" and "Inside Out". Looking at this film, it definitely has the most in common with "Inside Out". It takes the Pixar trope of taking inanimate or amorphous things and personifying them. Basically, what if {insert object or concept here} was alive? In this case instead of emotions it is the person's soul. The movie takes some twists and turns from that formula, but that is about all the trailer reveals so that is all the story beats I will reveal in this review. Let's start with the presentation. The animation and music in this film is some of Pixar's very best work. There are some moments of detail in the computer animation that I looked at and thought, animation just cannot be this good. They go the extra mile when it comes to animating characters playing musical instruments, it is both detailed, and from what people who know music better than me verified, accurate to how the instrument is played. Beyond the presentation, I am surprised how mature this movie is. Not in the usual "edgy humor" type of mature. But I mean full existential crisis, questions only adults typically think about type of maturity. The movie focuses on an adult man trying to live his musical dream. Then arise questions of reality sinking in. There is an emotional powerhouse scene between Jamie Foxx and his mother in this. There are no jokes, no punches, no villains, just two people having an adult heart to heart conversation and it is glorious. The movie does not talk down to its audience. It is possible that kids won't always "get" what's going on, but they will appreciate it as they grow up. The only downside I have after all this praise would be a few elements of the world building that don't make much sense. There is some typical third act drama that I thought this movie was good enough to avoid but it falls into it. The ending is a divisive one, and I don't think they nailed it. But the rest of the movie is good enough that you want to love the ending. With those negatives out of the way, I highly recommend this movie. If you are fan of animation, music, philosophies on life or just good story telling, you will like this film. This movie hits every beat just right and is great body and soul. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Jopa Z This film shows great maturity for a animation, as well as being extremely deep and moving, is one of the best animations of the time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/29/24 Full Review William B Very enjoyable. The message is good. The means not that much. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/23/24 Full Review Swanandi G You should probably watch this movie at least once in your life. It teaches us a lot about everything. We do need more movies like this so that we could learn how to appreciate small things around us 😌 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/16/24 Full Review Audience Member This is definitely one of the greatest Disney/Pixar movies i have ever seen. The only part i could critic on is Moonwind... I don't like this character and his abilities are to much for a mortal human. They never explained in the movie if he is above man-kind or just a regular dude. Really weird how he is able to speak with Joe and Soul 22 while he is spinning his sign at work. But i really love the story and Joe Gardner as a character. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/13/24 Full Review Read all reviews
