Whelan Barzey Time Out If anything, Soul is guilty of over-ambition. The wizardry and wit are there, but it lacks Pixar’s usual deftness in making complex themes sing for youngsters. Rated: 3/5 Jul 25, 2023 Full Review Stephen Romei The Australian What follows is an absolute delight. It will make any viewer cherish the life they have and want to live it more fully, every single day, ideally with lots of laughs along the way. Rated: 4/5 Feb 13, 2021 Full Review Kambole Campbell Hyperallergic It shortchanges itself at every turn by overextending itself. Feb 8, 2021 Full Review Francesca Steele iNews.co.uk It is a little scattergun in its approach, and the ontology may be a bit much for kids, but even they will relate to its message about appreciating life’s smaller pleasures, which this year feels like a good one. Rated: 4/5 Dec 10, 2024 Full Review Diana Tuova Spotlight on Film A hectic, but wonderful celebration of life, and a moving animated ode to New York City’s jazz scene. Rated: 4/5 Aug 23, 2024 Full Review Gautam Sunder The Hindu The studio’s first feature to frontline black characters is a stunning work of animation, with an important message to kids and adults alike. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/14/25 Full Review Giorgio G Well, what can I say?! When it's in the realm of humans it's a very decent animation for adults as it has some nice jazz in a cool, but somber daily life troubled environment. But when it dips into the spirit world, it's so immensely infantile that one thinks how any producer and/or director could have produced such a weird mix-up which pleases adults for half the time and small children for the other half, with each alternative half being very irritating to the other group. It makes no damn sense for any of those two demographic groups at all. As a total I'd say it's a 3/10, for the responding half it's better than 5/10!! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/10/25 Full Review Pear P My favourite Disney Animation!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/05/25 Full Review Vincent W 10/10, no notes needed Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/01/25 Full Review Aluna U Soul is Pixar’s first film featuring a Black main character, marking a bold and important step in representation. It offers a thought-provoking narrative about life, death, and purpose, visualized through vivid colors that distinguish different realms of existence. While critically acclaimed for its animation and music, the film’s complex themes make it more suitable for adults than children.
