Against the urban backdrop of Brooklyn, this poignant documentary profiles a part-time basketball coach named Kenny Jones, focusing on the paternal relationships he fosters with his players. While coaching an elite group of high-school-age street basketball players, Jones sees promise in Ed Smith, a troubled 18-year-old who's a whiz on the court. Jones struggles to nourish Smith's raw talent while also making sure his off-court troubles don't jeopardize his future.

What Soul in the Hole shows, with much joy and warmth and humor, is that the last thing basketball is, is a game. Go to Full Review

08/11/2008 Boger Smith was nasty! Read the SI article on him a couple of years ago, but never knew he went to a juco. Too bad about him not going back. Was the Charles Jones in this movie the same one that later went to LIU? The quality of the flick was poor (What was it made for, $500?) but the hoops footage and other stuff was great. It's like a precursor to Through the Fire... and different than Hoop Dreams.
