Critics Consensus

Spellbound makes for harmless viewing thanks to its colorful animation and clever moral, but this fairy tale can't quite summon any real charm.

John Nugent Empire Magazine A solid if fairly derivative attempt to steal Disney’s thunder. There’s enough pep and vigour here to keep kids interested, if not quite enough for the grown-ups.  Rated: 3/5 Dec 10, 2024 Full Review Ben Kenigsberg New York Times So, too, may viewers of "Spellbound" occasionally sense the enchantment zones of their brains lighting up, more as a reflexive response to dim memories of past animated features than as a genuine reaction to the derivative pastiche onscreen. Dec 9, 2024 Full Review Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News Zegler puts her amazing vocal range to great use in a playbook of quality songs from Alan Menken and Glenn Slater. Rated: 3/4 Nov 27, 2024 Full Review Carla Monfort Espinof It manages to recover in time toward its conclusion in the best way possible, but you can't shake the feeling that it could have been much more well-rounded. The jokes are OK, not hilarious, and the songs are merely fine — certainly below Menkin’s best work. Jonathan N Contains Spoilers: This is an absolutely amazing film, I watched it with my son before I had any idea what I was getting into and I think that made this movie so much better. If you didn't care about the background of why this movie was so impactful skip the next paragraph. As a recently divorced dad there are plenty of things you think about when deciding on divorce and one of the biggest is how it will affect your children. My former relationship was not healthy for anyone, but we stayed together longer than we should have, torturing both of us while our son got to live in a household where neither his mother or I were giving him our best because of the trauma we inflicted on each other. Now that we are divorced we are much better around each other and have worked on healing ourselves and our son can now see a healthy household with the joy and love a family should have for a child at both of our houses. With that background in place, the parents were starting to communicate with each other again after being turned to monsters, you didn't really know why, and they clash. At first you think it's just part of coming out of the monster phase, but as the film goes, you start to see the poor communication skills, arguing, fighting and I thought in my head at that moment "they need a divorce! But... That's not going to happen... They are going to paper over it and end with a happily ever after... So dumb!" But they didn't, they showed the reality of how that can affect your child negatively and if you work together with your ex, you can ensure that it can be a long term positive experience for everyone. Life is tough, raising kids is tough, and marriage is tough, but sometimes it doesn't work out, and that's ok and the child should know that isn't a problem with them and that their parents love them even if they don't love each other anymore. This helped me as a divorcee and also give me motivation to continue to work with my son and my ex to make the best life for him and to ensure he knows he's loved by both of us ❤️ Please make more movies like this that help with real life struggles and show children that anywhere they come from is ok even if it's difficult to understand right away. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/21/25 Full Review Ale R I absolutely loved the movie—the characters, the story, the music, the visuals, and the animation! Divorce is an experience that many kids unfortunately witness, and for those kids, understanding and processing the changes can be difficult. I think the message of the film could be really helpful for children who are going through similar experiences, letting them know that divorce doesn't mean the love and relationship with their parents will change, even if they're living apart. Sometimes, divorce can actually be the best choice for everyone in the household, allowing each person to live in peace instead of staying in a situation where two people can no longer get along, no matter how hard they try." Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/20/25 Full Review Audience Member Overall it is good for one watch if you can't relate. You never know if this could help a child understand this all too common situation better. The movie deals with tough subject matter for kids and I think it does it for them in a decent way. Story overall could have been a bit better at the beginning but it gets more socially invested in the characters as time passes. As a parent you can see how a child could view a situation like this so give the whole movie a chance. The voice acting is good, tunes are a little odd in places but catchy . The monster designs are interesting and the castle is pretty and the characters all have their own unique appearance. But I think visually this movie lacks in details. I don't know if it's because of the artistic intent to look more like a storybook, but if it is, it followed it way too closely. The lack of particle effects and effective lighting along with general details makes the movie feel dated. The enemy/force of nature/dark magic winds up looking like something out of a PlayStation 2. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/19/25 Full Review Aline S This movie is amazing! It’s an absolute must see and a masterpiece. It’s not for everyone as it is very sensitive about a few topics but if you have watch it with an open mind, it will hit you right. Lovely songs, amazing characters, and incredible story and execution. One of my favorite new animated movies. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/13/25 Full Review Claire R My 3yo is very interested in movies but finds literally everything too scary, except this movie which she absolutely loves. Alan Menken of course delivered a great score, the songs are catchy and pretty enjoyable, and the animation and character designs are beautiful. I wouldn't say it's an absolute standout, but it is a very good movie for a little kid, and so inoffensive that watching it every weekend and listening to the soundtrack 10x per day is not devastatingly irritating. My child doesn't know what divorce is, but seems to appreciate the moral that people can love one another deeply and still be unkind or thoughtless at times, which is a pretty big lesson for toddlers. Overall it's a nice, age-appropriate film for my kid who thinks every Disney and Pixar movie is way too scary. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/07/25 Full Review Audience Member If I could give it zero stars I would. As a daughter of divorce, I’ve NEVER met anyone who celebrated or merely enjoyed having divorced parents. This movie is an outright lie and I regret having wasted almost 2h of my life to this crap and even more so , watch it with my toddler children. Extremely disappointed at the trash they created and sold as a kids movie. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/02/25 Full Review Read all reviews
