Downey, Sr. was never a widely known filmmaker to the general public as he spent most of his years making underground movies many people probably never heard of. The time in this documentary devoted to his filmography will most likely not be of much interest to the average filmgoer. However, as the film progresses, and we witness the deterioration of the elder Downey's health, any of us who have lost a loved one - particularly a parent - will inevitably relate to many of the painfully personal moments captured on film. I suppose some may question putting on celluloid something as private and intimate as a dying man's final days. But there is nothing here that feels exploitative, and there's a certain poignancy of two people obviously in love with the art of filmmaking using it to encapsulate a lifetime of success, failure and regret. As someone caring for an elderly father, there are moments here that hit almost too close to home. I don't know if I would ever want to watch it again, but I'm glad I had the experience. Originated as a project detailing Sr.'s latest exploration of a potentially observed story, only to retain the journey's form and turn it into a formal profile detailing a mostly undiscovered career filled with intrigue. He provided glimpses of his father's directorial approaches and eventual wonder with inspired fascination towards an unsung filmmaker, while balancing it out between that and personal to enable this as a reflective father-son picture with usual filters through humor and pathos. A grateful tribute from a proud son to an encouraging father who would probably jokingly criticize as a loving front. (B+) Rated 4/5 Stars •  Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Shioka O This captured until the very last moment of the avant-garde director Downey Sr. I watched Putney Swope and couldn't get it, but this made me want to see it again and other works, too. Their attitude towards the film industry and Hollywood is interesting. And I simply surprised that their facial traits including the grandson are so look a like.
