Critics Consensus

Stage Mother teeters awkwardly on stereotypes, but Jacki Weaver's performance makes this culture clash dramedy difficult to dismiss.

Today, homophobia may still blight many a queen's family relations, but Stage Mother feels dated and formulaic. Go to Full Review

A sweet but ineffective comedy that cashes in on drag culture's new mainstream fame. Go to Full Review

What it might lack in terms of camp and chaos, it makes up for in heart. Don’t drag your heels, just sashay away to the cinema to feel the warm embrace of the Stage Mother. Go to Full Review

Never feels like the best version of itself. It’s charming and heartwarming when you view it from a certain angle; it’s funny in a cute way but never in a laugh-out-loud way; it has no visual style to speak of but is never unpleasant to look at. Go to Full Review

(Set in) an idealised world that wraps you up in easy solutions, and good humour. The film becomes a comforting lets-put-on-a-show dramedy, where everyone pitches in to turn the clubs fortunes around, and learns a little something on the way. Go to Full Review

Well done and great plot See more meredith w 01/29/2023 The touching but not entirely realistic story of a conservative church choir director inherits her late son's San Francisco drag club. It has feel good themes of acceptance and the performers, led by Jacqui Weaver, give engaging enough performances. See more sarah a 05/21/2021 Really moving and sad at times, but also has uplifting moments and humour. This film touches on real issues in the LBGTQ+ community that can be identified with. The main actress is absolutely brilliant and loveable. I enjoyed every moment of this film. See more adam n 04/12/2021 A heartfelt and touching yet somewhat superficial look at the unlikely bond between a conservative Texan mother and a San Francisco nightclub squad of emotionally sequestered drag queens. The tone felt reminiscent of films like 'Connie and Carla' - fun yet surfacy. For what this film lacked in originality and a missed opportunity of an exploration between these two colliding cultures, it makes up for by understanding what it wants to be and plays its hand of effective emotional beats very well. It's not to be taken too seriously. Through the cynical social-political lens of the 2020s I sadly did pick up on slight tones of a white straight saviour complex from the lead character towards the gay men, black trans woman and Asian woman she works to connect with. Each subplot was given just enough weight to feel the bond she develops with the queer crew but not enough to go deep into the real causes of these character's pain and complexity of the social issues they would be facing from day to day; instead it carries a lighter tone of a 'let me step in and fix the problems in your life while I'm here', type of vibe. Having said that, this ain't the lens you want to view the movie from. It's best enjoyed in you let it into your heart and roll with the emotional release it wants to give you. I enjoyed it and would recommend a watch. See more Read all reviews
