Critics Consensus

Visually spectacular and suitably action packed, Star Trek Into Darkness is a rock-solid installment in the venerable sci-fi franchise, even if it's not as fresh as its predecessor.

Larushka Ivan-Zadeh metro.co.uk Pulling off the trick of being both irreverent and Trekkie-pleasing, JJ Abrams effortlessly orchestrates massive action set pieces, a galaxy of 'cor look at that' CGI effects and well-modulated character scenes. Rated: 4/5 Sep 5, 2017 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire The socio-political commentary of 'Star Trek Into Darkness' is about as sophisticated as you'd expect from scribes Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtman, who also wrote the first two 'Transformers' movies. Laura C Love, love this movie!! I love this star trek movie,Chris pine is the hottest capt as James t Kirk! I love Bennedict cumberbatch as khan,he was the best evil villan!! love all the action scenes, best plot ,love this movie! go see this movie! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/05/22 Full Review Paul E I am 65 years old and have watched Star Trek since 1967. This movie was barely watchable. It broke the Star Trek timeline (Isn't Captain Pike in a wheelchair on Taos 4?) It has young Spock literally talking to himself, old Spock. It was a rehash of Star Trek II, the Wrath of Kahn. It even reverses the dying scene with Kirk dying instead of Spock. It basically TRASHED the entire Star Trek Franchise. Two Federation Starships fighting in Earth order and NOTHING else is around. NOBODY turns off the gravity on the ship to heavy objects won't be falling on people. Have to save KAHN with the IMMORTALITY blood to save Kirk. I guess none of the other 72 people have the same blood modification. Doctor McCoy confirms that people in the future will still be using pneumatic tires. "You don't rob a bank when the getaway car has a flat tire." Seriously!? For a LONG TIME Star Trek fan, this one is a real head shaker. How could it be this bad? Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/25 Full Review Brad S. R The first Star Trek movie that was a genuine displeasure to watch. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/25 Full Review Alastair S Can’t believe this was considered a decent film upon release . Awful awful dialogue…. Star Trek Into Lens Flare Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/25 Full Review Blu B I get why a casual moviegoer would like this a lot and have no problem and I also can see why this isn't that well liked by hardcore fans. I think from a fundamental perspective it's a good flick and a pretty good sequel to the 09' version. As a whole though it's missing that substance subject and character wise that the best Star Trek films have. This is much more like a popcorn Sci-Fi action adventure which is well made enough. But wht ideas are here are just recycled from Wrath of Khan effectively for better or for worse. If your a fan of the franchise than when you see things unfold there is just a feeling of Deja Vu. Things start to crack a bit in the final 40 minutes or so. The pacing overall isn't bad but the end man it just sort of drags with nonstop action. It reminds me of the end of Con Air with the firetruck chase which really wasn't needed and dragged things out. This is on top of the repeats of ideas from Star Trek II. So it does lose momentum significantly. The dirction is pretty good and everything else is well made. It does feel a bit of a step down overall though. There is a ton of CGI but everything done pretty well. All the characters are likeable but no one really has any character development like in 09'. It's more about a space action adventure than anything and for what it's worth it is well made storytelling wise. But the recycyling of ideas, lack of new ones, lack of character development for a sequel, and too much action at the end does hurt here. To varying degrees depending on how far back you go with this franchise. I think anyone who loved the 09', has never seen II, likes any actors in this, or the director should give this a try first. For longtime fans there is better stuff and I get it though I feel this isn't broken at all.
