Set ten years after the events of "The Phantom Menace," the Republic continues to be mired in strife and chaos. A separatist movement encompassing hundreds of planets and powerful corporate alliances poses new threats to the galaxy that even the Jedi cannot stem. These moves, long planned by an as yet unrevealed and powerful force, lead to the beginning of the Clone Wars -- and the beginning of the end of the Republic.

Critics Consensus

Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones benefits from an increased emphasis on thrilling action, although it's undercut by ponderous plot points and underdeveloped characters.

Andrew O'Hehir Sight & Sound A forgettable and discontented tale of entropy and corruption, of a grand, idealistic venture that has lost its way. Dec 19, 2019 Full Review Namrata Joshi Outlook Attack of the Clones fails to offer the same brand of unadulterated thrill and excitement as the Star Wars trilogy. Rated: 2/4 Jan 3, 2019 Full Review Stanley Kauffmann The New Republic His characters, as is now his norm, are plastic puppets, even in the confectionary love scenes. Most of their dialogue is so doughy that it could be spooned into comic-strip balloons. Lucas simply has no interest in these people. Apr 11, 2016 Full Review Calum Cooper Movies We Texted About Despite promising romantic and action-packed spectacles, its script is the definition of clunky. The convoluted nature of its themes and narrative is outclassed only by the mechanical dialogue and cumbersome love story. Rated: 2/5 Nov 11, 2024 Full Review Akhil Arora AkhilArora.com It’s also too wayward and listless—there’s little plot and the film waits to find plot elements. Despite a split narrative and promising political parallels (to the days of Caesar), it simply doesn’t have enough to grab your interest. May 31, 2024 Full Review Christian Eulinberg InSession Film I cannot express how terrible and dragged out the pacing of this entry was. It is the weakest episode of the prequel trilogy. Obi-wan K This is one of my most hated star wars movies also again stale cgi i've seen better Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/14/24 Full Review Tony T A great classic film that leads into Star Wars III. While at times, funny moments like “I hate sand, it gets everywhere” are hated on, this has few weak spots. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/13/24 Full Review Micah H The romance third is bad. The kamino third is good. And the epic ending is good. With 2/3 of this movie being well done, it’s definitely a step up for Phantom Menace. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/11/24 Full Review Will G This Movie is the worst of all the originals but beats all the sequels. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/05/24 Full Review Valentine S It's clonin time Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/04/24 Full Review Hemish W Where this movie becomes weak is in how it is used as a building block for the rest of the franchise. While EP 1 built up the main story, and started the franchise, this movie focuses on starting the main conflict of the saga. We see glimpses of Anakin's fall to the dark side, and we see the Jedi order becoming weaker and weaker. the third act of the movie is one of the best in any star wars movie. Everything about the Battle of Geonosis was perfect. The movie spent too much time building up to the third act, and building up the main conflict of the saga, but it was still an entertaining watch and a great movie. Definetly the weakest of the 6 movies, but still a great one. Much better than the sequel movies. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/04/24 Full Review Read all reviews
