Gene Siskel Chicago Tribune We know exactly where this film is headed, but director James Keach tells a slightly darker story than you might expect and delays the inevitable to the point of genuine entertainment. Audience Member Over 25 years old. Starring Robert Duvall playing Mr. Cox during the Great Depression who hasn’t struck gold yet. But he takes refuge in a Texas farmhouse run by a farmer and his wife. Mr. Cox has to find the oil underneath to make ends meet. But his motives might change over time. The movie gets by on Robert Duvall’s performance as an oil prospector in the 1930s even if the movie isn't perfect since you know where it's going. The family facing foreclosure on their farm is very sympathetic given their situation. James Keach directs a good dark story of greed, money, power, fighting adversity and doing the job for the soul of it, not the money. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/16/23 Full Review Steve D The talent doesn't bring much to the script. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Director James Keach tells a dark story about power, money, natural resources, family crisis, and overcoming the odds Robert Duvall stars as Mr. Cox, an oil prospector in the 1930s big oil was the booming business back in the days of the Great Depression and he sought to find a large sum of it Coming across a family in Henrietta he might just get the chance as their farm is rich with enough of it He makes a deal with an oil barren but it's not all smooth sailing This family in particular is losing income on their land so maybe finding oil would be beneficial But not everybody in this town is on board with Cox's ideals, most of them find him more trouble than he's worth But through adversity, struggle, determination, strong-will, and belief Mr. Cox intends to meet his goal and save this family The movie is hardly perfect but gets by on Robert Duvalls performance as a man that isn't into the job for the money but for the soul of it The family here is very likable and you feel for their dyer situation Oh and that cat is so darn cute too! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Had its drama moments but it was missing far more plot than it gives. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Beautifully and loving photographed by Bruce Surtees, a very good feel for the times. The sets are well thought out and excellent. The main flaw of the film is that is feels very overlong at only two hours. The acting is very good. It is just slow at times.
