In a Balkan country, intelligence head Col. Galcon (Jack Hawkins) forces vacationing eminent American brain surgeon John Marlowe (Douglas Fairbanks Jr.). to treat the nation's leader, who is secretly suffering from a serious brain trauma. After Marlowe operates, the dictator initially recovers -- but when he abruptly dies, Marlowe finds his life in jeopardy.
