      Critics Consensus

Staying Vertical takes a number of risks in its unorthodox approach to an unusual story -- and justifies many of them with an unpredictable and ultimately satisfying experience.

Serge L Sorry for the sad people (aka gay), this is crazy and puky. The joke is on the hero, some sort of spineless animal vaguely interested in wolves. He goes down by laziness, no drug involved! It was bad during all the sad (aka gay) part, but perked up funny again when he bunked with the sheeps. Overall: funny parts and puky parts. Not likely to happen in real life. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/17/18 Full Review Audience Member Desde "Adaptação", eu não via um filme tão esquisito sobre as vicissitudes sofridas por um roteirista. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member I like Guiraudie's usual detached style and oddball approach, but while I find this film generally interesting and enjoyable, it is hard to shake the feeling that it doesn't have that much to say or even focus when telling this passable character study about a confused writer. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member 7.4/10, my review: http://wp.me/p1eXom-2SY Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member I demand a ticket refund. Sure, I watched this bullshit at home yet I still want my effing money back. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member Don't feed the wolves. Ben Sachs Chicago Reader The strange action plays out with a dreamlike lucidity reminiscent of late Luis Buñuel... It's also dreamlike in its handling of time; the film takes place over a few years but feels as if it transpires over a few days. Apr 20, 2017 Full Review Glenn Kenny RogerEbert.com The movie's irreverence is in certain respects commendable, but its po-faced attempts at cinematic philosophizing are transparently stilted. Rated: 2/4 Jan 21, 2017 Full Review A.O. Scott New York Times "Being Vertical" ... has a rough gravity that holds your attention and sticks in your mind. Jan 19, 2017 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com This latest effort feels more like an efficiently polished return to the director's themes from earlier titles, where pernicious, peripheral villains constantly threaten distinctively rural settings. Rated: 3/5 Oct 4, 2019 Full Review Hope Madden Screen Relish Though the crossing storylines don't always work, the characters that populate this harsh but lovely environment pique your interest as Léo's journey captures your imagination. Rated: 4 Apr 8, 2019 Full Review Daniel Barnes Dare Daniel Guiraudie frequently abandons the audience in the story - we drift in and out of the narrative just as Léo drifts in and out of people's lives - but for all of the film's self-infatuation, it also offers no shortage of deeply disturbing show-stoppers.
