Edmund Wilson The New Republic Though it includes some respectable elements, it is essentially a trashy moving picture based on a trashy story. Audience Member Better than the 1937 version, which is saying a lot. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member skip this and she an actress with enough gravitas 2 carry the title role stanwyck's 1937 version a real tear jerker Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member I am shocked to see that I am the first person to leave a review for this absolutely beautiful silent film. I was lucky enough to see it at a special screening a month or two ago at the Walter Reade Theater in NYC, and the print was in terrific shape. Belle Bennett and Lois Moran are beyond amazing, and Henry King is a much underrated director. I cried all through the last third of the film, and still can't get the film's haunting, bittersweet ending scenes out of my head. If you get the chance to see the silent version of Stella Dallas, consider yourself lucky. Even though Barbara Stanwyck is one of my all-time favorite actresses, Belle Bennett cannot be beat.
