Andrew Sarris Film Culture Stella fails to reflect any distinctive aspect of Greek life. If Cacoyannis is to comprise a Greek film renaissance, he will require bigger themes and better scripts. Feb 3, 2021 Full Review Clyde Gilmour Maclean's Magazine An overheated sex-opera from Greece, pretentiously directed by the highly touted Michael Cacoyannis. Nov 22, 2019 Full Review Pablo Villaça Cinema em Cena Embora no julgue Mercouri particularmente atraente (um elemento importante do filme), devo reconhecer que sua Stella uma figura de vivacidade incontestvel. Audience Member Melina Mercouri is the fierce fire of classic tragedies in Greek cinema, the fire that can only be barely controlled with dynamite! the character of Stella has all the sensual and liberal features that seduced the Italians in the 60s and that would be easily banned in Egypt back in the 50s under the direction of Youssef Chahine. Even so, Kakogiannis' statement is a touching tragedy that accentuates the true meaning of female freedom with honesty in time of man's dominion in traditions such as marriage. Now, I may even be generalizing a societal aspect that I do not know that deeply especially in Europe; however, Stella's surrounding environment speaks for itself. 99/100 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Excellent movie, Foundas is great, Melina is Goddess..!!!!! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member A Greek "Carmen" with a great bazouki music score. Very interesting ending! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member A first Greek favorite and Cacoyanni's peak.Never mind Zorbas, this is true neo-realism like the Italian masters, dubious yet classic film concerning desperation, feminism and erotic passion. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Awesome movie...a must watch... Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Cacoyannis managed to make a first class modern greek tragedy in 1955!Melina Mercouri acts only with her expressive eyes, everything else is pointless!
