Peter G One of my favorite English movie character actors, Eddie Marsan, has had few starring roles to date & this affecting one represents some of his best work that I have seen so far. Marsan has played lonely characters before & here he is somewhat sad but kind & simple man with a strange occupation. His character works for a company that seeks out friends or next of kin of individuals who have passed on without leaving much background information or testaments & Mr. May, as Marsan‘s character is called, job involves to trying to track down the missing relatives & failing to do that arrange the burial of the unknown individual including attending to various religious denominational functions regarding the deceased. Mr. May has no real friends or relatives himself & takes great care in handling the details of his job. It's all he has really until he meets the estranged daughter of one of his departed ˋcustomers.‘ She is played by the radiant Joanne Froggatt (my favorite DOWNTOWN ABBEY female character) whose presence gives the first smile to Marsan‘s character in the film. Froggatt is one of those actresses that I wish were on screen more often but maybe she prefers stage work. Here although her role is a relatively short one it makes hers & Mr. May's interaction poignant without any hint of romance. I will lastly mention Rachel Portman‘s wonderful background music which enhances a film that is touching without, for me, overdoing the sentiment.
