Justin Chang Variety Zephyr Benson wrote, directed, produced and starred in this fitfully engaging but unconvincing account of his own tumultous, drug-addled youth. Mar 9, 2015 Full Review Martin Tsai Los Angeles Times "Straight Outta Tompkins" undeniably commands attention but also strives for authenticity ham-handedly. Mar 5, 2015 Full Review Sara Stewart New York Post Only in his early 20s, Zephyr Benson makes a remarkably assured debut as writer, director and star of "Straight Outta Tompkins," his tongue-in-cheek title for his past as a middle-class drug dealer in lower Manhattan. Audience Member If you grew up in or around the city (or any city for that matter) you'll understand and probably enjoy it as much as i did. if you grew up in the midwest you'll probably hate it. pretty straight to the point. its a movie about latch key kids. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member One star & one word: abysmal. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member I'm not familiar with any of Zephyr Benson's work, other than this one, but Straight Outta Tompkins feels so personal, it became special on its own. It's definitely worth watching and it is very good if you are the type of person who enjoys dramas about drug addiction and drug dealing. Overall, he knew what he wanted and he delivered it beautifully. However, he is a better filmmaker (screenwriter, director, producer), than an actor, and because of it, it was difficult to find an emotional attachment to his character Gene. Had he been played by someone more talented, perhaps it would have been possible to create that bond between the audience and the storyteller. Still, for a 20 year old debuting on his first authorial film, it was actually pretty decent. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member smart, sexy. id fuck him Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Writer/director/actor Zephyr Benson chronicles his own serious issues struggling with drug addiction and selling of narcotics in a rough area of New York City. It is at times a bit awkward, but it succeeds is feeling pretty authentic in its depiction of the mean streets of the Tmpkins area. Benson takes command of his material and surprises with how self assured he is. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member A movie like this should grab viewers by their heartstring, but it didn't. I didn't get that emotional attachment to Gene. However, as a depiction of life spiraling out of control from outside sources (drugs, death of the mother, abandonment of the father, and crooked support from the school principal), it does pull a few chords. Poor Gene has had it rough, and is surrounded by societal evils. Longing for acceptance and love, he finds it in all the wrong places; mainly, from the local drug dealers, one especially in particular. And the movie does make you sad to see what the world can do to one soul-less individual. By the end, we start to realize what fate lies ahead for Gene. And it's not pretty. Which is what the filmmaker was going for. The life he lead wasn't aesthetically appealing, and the audience should take away from it this fact. It's a morality tale done pretty well. There are plenty of other movies that do a better job with the concept, but this movie can still be appreciated by most. A sad ending, but one that increased interest in the film itself, despite Gene's fate. If movies like Kids, The Basketball Diaries or Requiem for a Dream interest you, you may like this one. It's a bit more tame, but falls along those lines. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
