James Agee TIME Magazine The acutely recorded small-town characters and atmospheres, and the intense performances of all four principal players, are something more. Frances H Perfectly done film of a character--driven psychological drama done by a talented woman who produced the wonderful Alred Hitchcock TV show. Unfortunately , as was done to the Orson Wells masterpiece, The Magnificent Ambersons, the studio decided to test other endings with audiences, who liked the hastily tacked on happy ending that that involved the main character having been in a dream, which the hokey prime time soap opera Dallas used a couple of decades ago. Too bad so many films were ruined totally, just like this one and Magnificent Ambersons. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/08/21 Full Review Audience Member This was a great movie until it got to a very bad cliched ending. If they would have ended it before that, or changed it, it would have been so much better than it was. Overall pretty good, but not as good as it could have been. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member An interesting movie. When aging bachelor Harry (Sanders) meets a beautiful woman named Deborah Brown (Raines), they instantly fall in love. The catch is that Harry has two sisters he lives with that are desperate and need him. When he and Deborah plan to get married, his sister Letty (Fitzgerald) does anything possible to fizzle the romance. "The Strange Affair of Uncle Harry" is a twisted little film that would most likely fall under the genre of film noir. Yet again, acclaimed director Robert Siodmak makes a great noir that sticks in your head forever. The acting performances are awesome, and Fitzgerald is so incredible in her messed up character that she should have at least been nominated for an Oscar. "The Strange Affair of Uncle Harry" is a movie that's most definitely worth your time, and any fan of film noir you'll be bound to like it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member You can't throw two anchors tied together into the water and expect them to float. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member This certainly is a strange affair. A noir melodrama with George Sanders playing the title role as a meek man who lives his two sisters. When a woman enters into his life, one of his sisters becomes a little too jealous and the plot thickens into darker territory. With overtones of incest this was a daring film of its day. However the ending is a total cop out and is quite obviously tacked on. -Loses 10% of its rating. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member A conventional story from Hollywood but one that is so wickedly immoral in its messagesl it is unconventional for its time.
