Ty Burr Washington Post “Straw” has all the feels it wants and little of the art it needs. Rated: 2/4 Jun 9, 2025 Full Review Lisa Kennedy New York Times Henson — so deeply committed to her character’s emotional cratering — still makes us care. Jun 9, 2025 Full Review Lovia Gyarkye The Hollywood Reporter Straw isn’t the worst Perry film, but it suffers from the same problems that plague all of his projects. The narrative is chock full of heavy-handed metaphors, fussy plotting and strained drama. The best parts of the film can be attributed to Henson. Jun 9, 2025 Full Review Karina Adelgaard Heaven of Horror ...a new thriller from Tyler Perry. What makes this one work so well? The way Taraji P. Henson and Sherri Shepherd carry the brutally realistic backstory. Rated: 3/5 Aug 11, 2025 Full Review Maxance Vincent FlickSided The twist concludes the movie with a bad taste in our mouth, and a realization that Perry will never be able to make art that will stand the test of time if he doesn’t treat serious subject matters like the ones he deals with in Straw with respect. Rated: 1.5/5 Jul 25, 2025 Full Review Anthony Whyte The Movie Blog With Straw, Perry reminds us that storytelling isn’t just entertainment it’s empathy. It’s not perfect, but it’s powerful. And if you’re someone who’s ever been one bad day away from breaking, Straw will feel personal. Jul 19, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Rebecca M This movie has all the feels, not only did it resonate but it also sent clear messages on what could actually break the camels back! For people out there who is looking for more perfection towards the storyline clearly don’t understand the struggles of the cost of being sick. I suffer seizures myself every day and it’s not just the cost that sets me back. It’s having to live with it and try not be judged by other people when you’re triggered. People think it’s like a flu, when you’re actually dying inside. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/19/25 Full Review Laura H This is well-written, true to real life experience and beautifully dramatic. Don’t Witte this film off because IT WILL. BE one of the best you EEEEEVA see. ❤️ Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/17/25 Full Review Marieke H This police woman Teyana Taylor... Looks nothing like a believable police. It's not a runway. Skip the over the top make up. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/16/25 Full Review Marcella R This movie made me shed tears, and I never cry while watching movies. It was moving, and although some parts were dramatized depictions of reality, the story and the message need to be heard. This was a beautiful portrayal of the struggle. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/16/25 Full Review Richard H This is one where the audience score is a better guide than the critics. Henson and Shepherd in particular keep it on track despite some questionable script choices. If you give it a chance and watch until the end you would have to have a heart of stone to not be moved. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/15/25 Full Review Joanna T Very sad story about a poor, single, Black mother who has a hard time making ends meet. Can barely give her kid lunch money at school. The teacher got concerned and called child services since apparently her child comes to school hungry. Child services takes the child away but the mom is concerned because her daughter is sick and so needs a lot of maintenance. The poor woman has a hard day since it's busy at work (the grocery store), but the school called her, she has a mean boss that she has to get back to but he won't give her her paycheck so that she can cash it and give lunch money to her kid. Not to mention her landlord wants the apartment rent. Her kid got taken away, then she gets into a car accident on her way back to work in which the police tow her car away. She arrives back at work late, her boss fires her, and then there is an attempted robbery at the store while she is trying to get her paycheck. She wrestles with the burglars, gets a gun, shoots 1 of them, then the other one runs off. In a panic, she shoots her mean boss as well and takes her last paycheck. She goes to the bank to cash her paycheck. She had previously been at the bank and was confused as to why she couldn't withdraw $40 when she has $47 in the bank, but the branch manager told her that she needs a minimum otherwise her account will be closed, and that she had to wait in a long time. This time, at the bank, the associate wouldn't cash her check without an ID. She probably left her ID at the grocery store or the police took it. She gets frustrated and points the gun at the associate telling her to cash the check. This is when the woman loses it because she doesn't realize she is pointing the gun, and the bank associates start handing her way more cash than she asked for. She accidentally gets into a hostage situation but doesn't harm anyone. One of the associates starts live streaming the whole situation from her phone and sets the phone on a desk. Lots of people empathize with the woman. In the end, we find out that her daughter has died due to medical complications (the daughter was probably distressed and also didn't have her medication) while the mom was in the bank situation. It was sad because the daughter also got taken away because she had bruises on her body but it was just from a fall. In the end, the woman gets handcuffed by the police. But many people empathize with her so she probably won't get a lot of jail time. I'm surprised that child services was so easily able to take the child away. They did say they needed to examine the apartment. But then the landlord also took all of the woman's belongings and threw them out into the street. Sad story about poor people getting poorer, and not getting any help and getting into a hole, with no way to get out. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/13/25 Full Review Read all reviews
