Critics Consensus

Stress Positions plays on familiar seriocomic tropes with sporadic verve, although the characters are occasionally more interesting than the story they're being used to tell.

Alexandra Heller-Nicholas AWFJ.org Stress Positions feels like a movie that is orchestrated as much as directed and Hammel’s intuitive grasp on the rhythms of everyday conversation are a thing of wonder, granting the film an extraordinary energy and almost palpable freshness Jun 11, 2024 Full Review Ty Burr Ty Burr's Watch List (Substack) The cast is enthusiastic and often very funny, and, as a filmmaker, Hammel is one to watch. Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 26, 2024 Full Review Peter Sobczynski RogerEbert.com If the film concentrated more on this and less on the increasingly chaotic proceedings on display, it might have become more than an endless litany of smug obnoxiousness. Rated: 2/4 Apr 19, 2024 Full Review John Serba Decider It’s a hard movie to love, but one whose methodology and frame of reference are consistently fascinating. Aug 23, 2024 Full Review Abe Friedtanzer The Film Experience Hammel has a distinct voice that comes through in her script, direction, and performance. Rated: B Jul 24, 2024 Full Review Stacey Yvonne Wealth of Geeks Writer/director Theda Hammel's newest Sundance feature, Stress Positions is a sharp and layered satire about love in the time of the pandemic. Emma S This was the worst movie I have ever seen. I found it to be simultaneously boring, disturbing, meaningless with pathetic acting. I honestly almost walked out several times but then began to delight in just how awful it was. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/23/24 Full Review tory a Hilarious, fast paced- such a good movie. FINALLY a movie with some character development and dialogue! This is a smart love story - very well acted and totally engrossing! :) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/01/24 Full Review Larry L I am watching this movie at this moment I find nothing shocking or entertaining about it. The director and actor will never be mistaken for a woman. It takes more than a couple of socks to pad your low cut dress. I've never understood why an unattractive man would want to be a woman it's a mystery to me. Everyone acts like homosexuality is some big new thing the trend it's been around for a very very long time so it's nothing new to me. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/20/24 Full Review Alec B The issue isn't that most of the characters are unpleasant, its that a few pointed ones are offered grace and understanding which doesn't really fit with the movie's overall vibe. That's a shame because there are hints of this being a really savage comedy but when you pull punches that just doesn't work. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/27/24 Full Review Christopher M I was genuinely uncomfortable with these characters at times, so when the humor lands, and lands hard, it provides a manic release. There are shades of brilliance in this film, and I can’t think of any movie or television show that this is similar to. That is a wonderful thing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/11/24 Full Review Christopher S Love that it's a very modern 'period piece' on life during COVID that is about something other than the virus Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/07/24 Full Review Read all reviews
