Karen Han New York Times A title like "Struggle: The Life and Lost Art of Szukalski" suggests a breadth and depth that's difficult to live up to, which makes it all the more remarkable that this Netflix documentary by Irek Dobrowolski manages to deliver. Dec 26, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

Leo F It was a funny, inspiring yet also a disturbing portrayal of a person, which is why I loved it. With social media and ads, we're inundated with very myopic views of people's lives. This documentary displayed the complexities of person throughout their life. We follow Szukalski from his childhood in Poland, trek to America, then back and forth between the two. Although the documentary briefly mentions it, he may be a person who struggled with some type of personality disorder - they did mention megalomania. I can't imagine what growing up in Poland during communism and WWI and two does to a person. He even suffered a few childhood losses. Overall, we see a very balanced view of his life told from people close to him and told in his own words. The fact that he lived to be 93 says something about his belief and how he lived his life. I'm not giving it five stars, because somehow it didn't fully emotionally resonate with me. I wasn't captivated by the storytelling, throughout. Looking forward to more documentaries from Netflix. Incredible Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review aqsw d A very talented artist. The definition of a true artist. Peel away all the idiots - the friends - the documentary personnel. Szukalski stands on his own. He is not a god of art. He is a human being with all the built-in defects. He "is" very talented. I believe he has a good heart. I just hope he is a Christian, the key. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Captivating! I couldn't sleep the rest of the night...so stunned by the genius! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member The most absolute stunning film that breaks and wows my heart of an utterly astonishing and unique sculptor artist. What a fascinating individual. "You asked me where I learned anatomy from? I learned from my father." Harrowingly beautiful. I love this documentary film and I'm so sorry to hear that his artwork is being used in Europe for ideologies he no longer supports. I bawled my eyes out at the ending and of his passing.
