A busy doctor plans to spend her annual vacation fulfilling her long-held dream of sailing from Gibraltar to the small island of Ascension in the Atlantic. But everything changes when she sees a damaged, overloaded boat full of refugees nearby. Knowing that at least a hundred people could drown, she begins to organize to help them but slowly begins to fear that it will be impossible to do so.

It takes a certain kind of viewer to enjoy this. I can appreciate it on a technical level, the cinematography and underlying message are powerful. But there’s not enough actual narrative, diologue, or character development to truly get into the story on an emotional level.

This movie is a gem. Thought-provoking and demoralizing, you root for the main character. You feel her angst and frustration. The last scene asks the question - what would you do when confronted by the same situation?

Suzanne Wolff has her work cut out for her in this role, and she makes Styx shine as Rieke wrestles with inner demons, summoning the courage required of her, then despairs as she is shunned for it.
