      Submergence

      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

A slow-moving misfire, Submergence isn't as deep as it thinks it is -- but still manages to drown its stars in a drama whose admirable ambitions remain almost entirely unfulfilled.

laura m The best parts are: the score (Fernando Velasquez's music of the main title is magical), the Bar at the Maison Atlantique Hotel, the Blockhaus of Sainte Marguerite sur mer, the sweetness melancholy in Danny's eyes, the view of the Faroe Islands, the way Wim Wenders show us the story. I enjoyed it and watched it several times. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/21/23 Full Review maria m I truly liked this movie and just wanted to thank Wim Wenders for once again creating such an incredible movie. True sensitivity and then the art to transmit in a movie form the subtle perceptions, and what is behind people's directions in life. It takes immense courage to look into the darkness, and when we pay the price.... do we really want to go so deep into that darkness? Or shall we instead focus on creating more of the light? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review steve d The actors make it work despite the melodrama. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member McAvoy and Vikander fall in love over vacation. All good. But when they go back to their jobs (McAvoy gets taken prisoner, Vikander on the bottom of the ocean) - things get weird. The attempt to keep the love connection fails despite great filming. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Not a very good film. Had a few cringeworthy scenes between the two stars. Boring story line. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/03/21 Full Review Marty C There is tension.... then more tension....... then more tension....... then more tension....... then more tension....... then more tension....... then more tension....... then more tension... and then it ends.... J. R. Jones Chicago Reader These scenarios may seem like exotic action fare, but the film, adapted from a novel by J.M. Ledgard and gracefully directed by Wim Wenders, tends toward romance and philosophy. Apr 7, 2020 Full Review David Stratton The Australian It's all a bit too literal, and much of the dialogue is stiff and unnatural. Rated: 2/5 Aug 17, 2018 Full Review Jake Wilson The Age (Australia) This is the film of an old man who has retained a humble, almost naive attitude to experience, an awareness there are depths he has left unplumbed. There is something quite moving about this. Rated: 3/5 Aug 8, 2018 Full Review Allen Almachar The MacGuffin When melodramas work, they stick in our minds and stay there. But with this, it had such little to offer that I'm already starting to forget it. Rated: C- Nov 2, 2021 Full Review Andrew Murray The Upcoming Top it off with a self-indulgent conclusion and Submergence is a romantic thriller that hits rock bottom. Rated: 1/5 Feb 2, 2021 Full Review Mikel Zorrilla Espinof 'Immersion' is, at best, a failed proposal in which the only thing that really pays off is its two protagonists.
