Critics Consensus

A disappointing misfire for director George Clooney, Suburbicon attempts to juggle social satire, racial commentary, and murder mystery -- and ends up making a mess of all three.

Donald Clarke Irish Times You know what they say about the road to hell. Here the good intentions are so compromised they scarcely merit the description. Blu B Not really boring but just not really well put together at all. I'm not sure what Clooney was going for here. A satire on middle class life? the 50's? Racial Relations? A Hitchcock mystery? All of the Above? Regardless it just never comes together at all. It's also very unfocused. Sometimes it's from the perspective of the boy, than the parents, than the racial relations, and sometimes a little of all of it. The music also plays nonstop and is way too overused. It's so boring and gets on your nerves. The lighting in this is very dull and lifeless as well. The acting is alright and is the one thing in this that isn't subpar but no one has any real chemistry. None of the dialouge is that snappy either. There isn't any tension at all in this either but it's somehow never boring either. Skip This. I really don't know what this is. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/13/24 Full Review Dmitriy M well this is the case when I am totally disagree with critics I liked it pretty much Amazing scenes of riding bicycle or playing ping pong :) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/26/24 Full Review Georgan G 3 & 1/4 stars. This unusual film attracted me as I love the Coen brothers' writing. The plot follows hypocrites in their violence, hatred, selfishness & ignorance. The most amusing part was the son walking in on paddling of step-mom/aunt. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/25/24 Full Review nashawna b A soup sandwich from beginning to end. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/29/23 Full Review Stoner J This flick is pretty awesome. Mostly cuz all the right people get the axe in the end, well, minus the kids uncle Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/03/23 Full Review Felix T I can't believe the low ratings for this movie. It was spot on when it comes to the American Con from all. They weren't mean, it was just another day in that decade. It isn't the caliber of Fargo, but it has some of the same humor at how silly humans can be when they pursue what they perceive as happiness. What a mess.
