What to Know

Critics Consensus

It's technically impressive and loaded with eye-catching images, but without characters or a plot to support them, all of Sucker Punch's visual thrills are for naught.

Anna Pearce Bitch Media Sucker Punch packs a pretty strong wallop. I enjoyed a lot of it, but I wish someone had warned me that a lobotomy was going to be a major plot point. Jan 8, 2021 Full Review Andrea Gronvall Chicago Reader Gun-toting hotties combat assorted villains and their robot henchmen in this tawdry, repellent action fantasy. Dec 6, 2011 Full Review William Goss Film.com Snyder likes to think that his Russian nesting doll of a concept is enough to excuse its hollow center. Jun 29, 2011 Full Review Justin Brown Medium Popcorn This was god awful. There was a lack of depth in the female characters so it's just eye candy with some dope action scenes. But without any substance, the gimmicks get old very fast. Rated: 1/5 Aug 25, 2023 Full Review Brandon Collins Medium Popcorn Despite some incredible visuals and eye candy, this movie executed so poorly and backwards that it's offensive. The actresses were clearly sold a different movie than what was ultimately put on the screen. Emily Browning was greatly miscast. Rated: 1/5 Aug 25, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Snyder packs on the thematic symbolism with as much subtlety as his three-story-high samurai toting a Minigun can provide. Karl A Sucker Punch is brilliant. It subverts expectations on every level, and exceeds tradtional boundaries of story telling. It's an entertaining acid trip of a movie, with meta-levels of reality-- and un-reality-- that are unique and internally consistent, but it requires the viewer to pay attention. The feel of the movie is like a popcorn flick, so it seems that some reviewers engaged only superficially and totally missed the bus. This movie made me think about it long after viewing, and I still feel the resonance to this day. Worthy of multiple viewings, there are some excellent YouTube deep-dives into Sucker Punch that are worth a watch also. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/09/24 Full Review Mandy C I have enjoyed this film for long time, it has an incredible soundtrack 🫶🏻 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/25/24 Full Review MS. J I’ve watched Sucker Punch over 10 times since I was a teenager, and it continues to resonate with me deeply. This movie is more than just entertainment; it’s a powerful escape and an emotional outlet. The film’s themes of fighting through trauma and taking control of one’s own narrative speak to me on a personal level, as it mirrors struggles I’ve faced in my own life. The visuals, action sequences, and symbolism are stunning, but what stands out the most for me is how the story uses fantasy as a form of survival and resilience. It’s not just about the action or the battles—it’s about finding strength within when everything feels hopeless. The soundtrack is also amazing, amplifying the emotional intensity of each scene. For anyone who’s experienced tough times or is looking for a movie that goes beyond the surface, Sucker Punch delivers on every front. It’s a film that I’ll always hold close, not just for its artistry but for how it helped me process my own journey. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/30/24 Full Review Audience Member Loved this for years and I just gotta say it at this point. THESE critics should be fried you are not capable of seeing behind the FACADE! Truly ahead of its time💗 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/13/24 Full Review Quintus P Absolutely an underrated film. Movie is excellent and a good mind trip. In seeing the low score under the ratings, it's evident many people didn't understand it. Well written and beautifully executed. If you are the type who enjoys mature themes and very dark stories (which are the core of this film) which have layers beyond just the special effects, then this movie is a must see (and if you don't get it the first time or are confused, watch it again... once you understand the film, you will understand why it is so loved by those who post the positive reviews) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/13/24 Full Review Read all reviews
