What to Know

Critics Consensus

It's technically impressive and loaded with eye-catching images, but without characters or a plot to support them, all of Sucker Punch's visual thrills are for naught.

Anna Pearce Bitch Media Sucker Punch packs a pretty strong wallop. I enjoyed a lot of it, but I wish someone had warned me that a lobotomy was going to be a major plot point. Jan 8, 2021 Full Review Andrea Gronvall Chicago Reader Gun-toting hotties combat assorted villains and their robot henchmen in this tawdry, repellent action fantasy. Dec 6, 2011 Full Review William Goss Film.com Snyder likes to think that his Russian nesting doll of a concept is enough to excuse its hollow center. Jun 29, 2011 Full Review Justin Brown Medium Popcorn This was god awful. There was a lack of depth in the female characters so it's just eye candy with some dope action scenes. But without any substance, the gimmicks get old very fast. Rated: 1/5 Aug 25, 2023 Full Review Brandon Collins Medium Popcorn Despite some incredible visuals and eye candy, this movie executed so poorly and backwards that it's offensive. The actresses were clearly sold a different movie than what was ultimately put on the screen. Emily Browning was greatly miscast. Rated: 1/5 Aug 25, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Snyder packs on the thematic symbolism with as much subtlety as his three-story-high samurai toting a Minigun can provide. John B I genuinely don't get the hatred for this film. The premise of young women being exploited in the setting of a psychiatric institution is indeed disturbing and many commentators are maybe a little concerned at their own complicity in such voyeurism but personally I think this lends credence to the escapism of the visually fabulous choreographed set pieces and transportation to different fantasy realms when the main protagonist, played by Emily Browning, enters a trance like state through dancing. There are certainly many more mainstream films that are far more disturbing and graphic in terms of the abuse of young women by mainly men in a position of authority. That each of the "mini adventures" of the heroines links to a part of the escape plan (the map, the key, the knife...) is perfectly acceptable as a plot device, not as challenging to follow as something like Inception, but way above your bog standard Marvel film. Also, unlike your standard Marvel film it actually feels like there is genuine threat to the characters and (spoiler alert) not everyone gets out. If you like the music genre, the soundtrack is also excellent and worth listening to as a collected work in it's own right. My favourite White Rabbit by Emilíana Torrini. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/25/25 Full Review Brianna S I thought it was a deeply disturbing/disgusting film. It’s a “feminist” movie but none of the leading ladies win in the end. And genuinely disturbing scenes I wish I was warned about. I don’t know how this movie isn’t R rated. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/20/25 Full Review Audience Member "Awww, you're killin me Zach" I am a collector. This is the only 2 or less movie I am probably ever going to keep in my collection. The story is a bonafide hot mess. Contrived, nonsensical, incoherent, ad nausea. The Visuals= Rich, Deep, Immersive, Anachronistic, brooding, Gothic. Zach can make literally THE coolest LOOKING movies- and his fight sequences and odd camera angles/particulars, there are none better and he is a master at the craft of direction. This one's story was fairly awful though. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 05/03/25 Full Review Audience Member A minimal (but interesting enought) plot to keep some really cool action scenes together. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/22/25 Full Review Keith B B This was such a strange movie I doubt I'd ever bother to see it again. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/07/25 Full Review Read all reviews
