Nell Minow AWFJ.org McCormack's performance is achingly vulnerable and the filmmaking has an intimate, almost documentary mood. Andrew Joe D This movie was bad. The main actress is not very good and at times it can be really annoying. She's supposed to be some kind of musician who's trying to hone her craft while taking a side job as a fancy escort. There's some interesting things in the movie that keep you engaged for a while, but then it all comes back to how annoying the main characters egotistical selfish little girl attitude is. Something that really cracked me up in this movie was after she was fooled into having sex with this dude she went out with, he gave her a check for $100,000 and she asks him " did you like my singing"? Like a little 5-year-old girl. First of all who would pay her that much money? Then she gets her daddy's records and puts them in a circle and gets all drunk and dances around and like a third of the movie is her doing that at the end trying to be all artistic. This movie smells like cheese. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/16/24 Full Review Jenny S This film is so profound and multi-layered. It requires a lot from the viewer and that is to my mind, just another one of its strengths. It asks us to grapple with a female character who is unlikable and sloppy, and who might not even like us if she were to encounter us. And it asks us to find the humanity and beauty in her messy process. Darren is hard to root for. And in crafting this type of character I think the writer may be inviting the viewer to go a little deeper; to ask us to see ourselves more fully and not to compartmentalize the likeable parts and the unlikable ones. Which is what these industries always do to women. The film seems to be dealing with the idea that the sacred exists within the profane and the profane exists within the sacred. She even names two side by side vinettes; Beautiful and Atrocious. In the beginning of the film Darren is angry and unconscious in her intentions and actions. She isn't sure how to maneuver in the world and is really just surviving. She does what she has too and takes a job sugar daddying- spending time with men in exchange for money. She also pursues her music which is clearly where her soul lies, and the motivating factor for all her actions. She has a lot of failures; but she has opportunities that allow her to fail upward. Thankfully by the films end she gets a bit more comfy and is able to have a pretty shifting emotional catharsis. This film is a tribute to misfits; folks who have driving potential but aren't sure how to package it, and those who are willing to live on the edge in order to create. It asks hard questions of the viewer and doesn't give us a lot of cush. In my opinion that makes it better. She asks questions about women and art, and sustainability, and power exchanges. Darren evolves as we are asked to ponder these questions; and by the end finds a pause and a tentative peace inside herself. I watched the film twice and I am so glad I gave it its due. The film will work on you for a long time after you watch it. Can't wait to see more from this visionary human, feminist puppetry please... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/29/23 Full Review streng g A Movie for European Film-Festivals Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/02/23 Full Review Audience Member A very Painfull ""ART"" Movie Time i could spend better wih watching Clouds fly by. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member I loved it !!! Beautifully made , great acting . Relevant to young authentic woman struggling between self expression and basic live principles. I think this is very underrated movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review dave d Well, it's not a female empowerment story that's for sure. It's one long ad for an old man hook up website and it's too PG 13 and not enough R which leaves it in the middle of the road. When you call your film, 'Sugar Daddy' the material should push the envelope at least a little. Despite a heartfelt performance from Kelly McCormack, who also wrote and produced, we're not given much of a reason to like any of the characters. This film needed another pass.
