Critics Consensus

Suicide Squad boasts a talented cast and a little more humor than previous DCEU efforts, but they aren't enough to save the disappointing end result from a muddled plot, thinly written characters, and choppy directing.

David Ayer’s original intentions—grounded, character-driven, and morally grim—are still visible beneath the surface, especially in the quieter moments with Deadshot, Harley Quinn, and El Diablo. But the final product feels reshuffled and stitched together, with abrupt needle drops, disjointed pacing, and a plot built around a weak, weightless villain. The team dynamics occasionally work, and the cast gives more than the script allows, but the film’s identity is constantly at war with itself. Its most interesting elements—trauma, loyalty, and moral ambiguity—are buried under last-minute edits designed to imitate a lighter tone. The result is an uneven, compromised movie that hints at something far stronger than what ended up onscreen.
