Critics Consensus

Suicide Squad boasts a talented cast and a little more humor than previous DCEU efforts, but they aren't enough to save the disappointing end result from a muddled plot, thinly written characters, and choppy directing.

B You know... it's kind of crazy how high our standards used to be for comic book movies (and how low they are now). I just rewatched Suicide Squad for the first time since I watched it in theaters back in 2016. First, disclaimer: I watched the extended cut, and I have no idea what content is unique to this version. That's said: This movie came out during the golden age of the MCU, and on the heels of the Dark Knight Trilogy, Man of Steel, etc. We were all downright spoiled with amazing comic book movies coming out left and right. Suicide Squad is not an amazing movie... but it's also not terrible... and compared to most movies released in the genre over the past few years... it's practically a masterpiece. The story is a bit derivative, but it's also pretty coherent. The acting is mostly solid. There are legitimate character arcs, with real development. The stakes feel legitimately big... and there's a good balance between humor and drama, without one undercutting the other. I would watch Suicide Squad every day for months before I'd rewatch Thor: Love & Thunder. Suicide Squad is every bit as good as (if not better than) Thunderbolts*. Hell, it has its flaws, but I genuinely think it's overall a better movie than the new Superman. I didn't like gang banger Joker, and Killer Croc looked super weird (and the actor was too small)... but are we going to act like Margot Robbie didn't kill it as Harley Quinn, that Will Smith wasn't good as Deadshot, that Ben Affleck's Batman cameos weren't awesome... and that generally speaking, the casting and performances weren't good? This film has been unfairly maligned... if it had been released in 2025, it would have been an absolute hit, with glowing reviews. We were too hard on our comic book movies back then, and we're too easy on them now. If it's been 9 years since you've seen this movie, and you don't really remember it... you just know you're supposed to think it's terrible, because that's what the internet has told you to think... I encourage you to give it a rewatch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/18/25 Full Review Camden G The joker was the worst part of the movie but I thought everything else was good to amazing. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/17/25 Full Review Hughe J Suicide Squad was released in 2016 and is DC's version of the Guardians of the Galaxy without any of the humor or fun present in those movies. It stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Viola Davis and others. It's the old "putting the gang back together" trope. Davis plays Amanda Waller who heads a government program taking dangerous criminals and sending them out on missions where it's basically suicide for the squad, hence the title. Robbie plays Harley Quinn and honestly nails the role. Leto plays the Joker and for me is the worst Joker of any movie or show ever made. The rest of the cast is fine but the plot and SFX are just terrible. The villain does weird dancing moves for some reason and for the conclusion we have another evil sky beam. The movie wasn't fun or entertaining, Leto was really distracting, and Smith was boring. Overall, a pretty bland film and one to avoid. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/09/25 Full Review Read all reviews
