Jessica Kiang Variety Trapped in a muddy, deterministic plot, hurting, guilt-ridden characters bond tenuously while a seasonal heat wave makes everyone torpid and irritable, and generally no one seems to have much fun, least of all the audience. May 30, 2019 Full Review Deborah Young The Hollywood Reporter The poetic screenplay is reinforced by Dong Yingda's melancholy score with its poignant repeated motif and Jeffrey Chu's romantic lighting. May 28, 2019 Full Review Jonathan Romney Screen International A disappointingly lacklustre affair whose procedural thrills get increasingly bogged down in a morass of tepid psychodrama, with transcendental trimmings. May 23, 2019 Full Review Chris Mello In Review Online [Summer of Changsha is] a maudlin piece of fake deep psychodrama that doesn’t even have the good sense to entertain. Changsha is a film that hardly establishes the goodwill it works so hard to erode over two very long hours. May 18, 2022 Full Review Àngel Quintana Caimán Cuadernos de Cine [Director] Zu Feng falls progressively in rhetoric until the film breaks down. [Full review in Spanish] May 29, 2019 Full Review Diego Batlle Otroscines.com Little by little this film degrades, disintegrating, derailing and in its second half directly loses the axis and the compass. Scott H I enjoyed it immensly, but I lived in China as a Westerner for years, and many little nuances resonate with me. I suspect many of the 'top critics' who rated it low were unaware of Chinese culture and tried watching it through their safe and familiar Western framework. If you like Chinese movies and serials, and a familiar with Chinese customs, then you will get so much more out of this than someone who sees foreign films as merely foreign.
