Critics Consensus

Summering is a harmless enough coming-of-age story, but there are far superior -- and far less saccharine -- entries in this crowded genre.

Peter Bradshaw Guardian The ending is a tiresome new-agey cop-out and a lot of viable ideas have gone to waste. A disappointment. Rated: 2/5 Nov 30, 2022 Full Review Kimber Myers Crooked Marquee With its rare focus on girls’ friendship and growing up, 'Summering' has good intentions but that never actually makes it a good movie. Girls are owed their own 'Stand by Me,' but they deserve so much better than this. Rated: D+ Aug 29, 2022 Full Review Chris Hewitt Los Angeles Times That ethereal sort of thing could get gloopy and sentimental, but “Summering” balances the bucolic stuff with bits of acidic humor. Aug 15, 2022 Full Review Nuha Hassan Off Colour Ponsoldt’s Summering feels a bit disjointed as the themes and narratives are all over the place, but there are so many moments between them that makes the movie worthwhile. Jul 21, 2023 Full Review M.N. Miller Ready Steady Cut Summering loses its soul and never bothers to recover it. Rated: 2.5/5 Jan 3, 2023 Full Review Carla Hay Culture Mix Summering is a monotonous pseudo-mystery about four 11-year-old girls who find a dead man's body and talk and act in ways that are very unrealistic for pre-teen girls. This pointless waste of time gets more irritating as it goes along. Avoid at all costs. Sep 21, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Eric B Excellent film! Like nothing that I had ever seen before. Some interesting twists and turns. You don't need a massive Hollywood budget to make a good movie. Nice work!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/17/22 Full Review Mr. Hollywood Was a decent enough film until it just took a main plot point and just let it go. Totally changed the movie for me. You cant introduce a major plot point like that and then just toss it away like its nothing. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/16/22 Full Review Dawn G great movie that touches on the importance of the loving bond of childhood friends. No violence. No sex. No profanity. More movies should be made like this one. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/16/22 Full Review ranny l We all know what it's like to face change and challenges. And we always desire the best possible outcome from a predicament. Summering tells a relatable story about young girls finding their way through a challenge, while delivering a distinctive storyline. Summering focuses on four best friends Dina (Madalen Mills), Lola (Sanai Victoria), Mari (Eden Grace Redfield), and Daisy (Lia Barnett) who are about to start middle school. With that comes plenty of questions and new challenges. On the weekend before school starts, the girls find themselves embarking on a peculiar adventure. These four best friends must work together to find the answer to their mystery and prepare for this new chapter in their lives. Even though the characters in Summering are facing a fictional and fantasy-like situation, the plot is still somewhat relatable. These four best friends have to explore themselves and find out who they really are as they are growing older. They know that it is best to go on this journey together, but they worry about what obstacles will get in the way. Dina, Lola, Mari and Daisy also all have specific issues present in their life, making their friendships even more crucial. Anybody that is going through significant changes, no matter if they are young or old, can find something applicable to their lives in this story. The plot of Summering does seem a bit incomplete and choppy at certain parts of the film-the main mystery and conflict aren't really resolved which can leave viewers confused after watching. The background music of the film is particularly interesting as it matches the tone of the film and the events taking place in the scenes. Summering has a darker style, and the dark music compliments that-"props" to Drum & Lace for providing this high-quality soundtrack. The message of Summering is that a lot of times opposites attract. Dina, Lola, Mari, and Daisy need each other to balance themselves out. Each brings something different to the friend group, ultimately bringing them all closer together. I give Summering 3.5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 12 to 18. This film has minimal mild language and a middle school to high school demographic would enjoy it. By Maica N., KIDS FIRST! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Jane M Could not wait for it to be over. It was painful. Poor acting, so unrealistic, just...I want my time back. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/15/22 Full Review Audience Member Great cast and story. Classic tale of friendship and power of mothers and daughters - well told.
