Audience Member Well this was a treat. I don't think I fully appreciated the fact that Sun Ra existed/exists. Sun Ra came from another planet..literally…Saturn. I watched this based on Peter Wright's trusted recommendation. I know about Sun Ra, but I haven't seen them in their current form and I don't own any of their 90+ albums..I also didn't know much about them at all. That's one thing I love about docs, they allow for a deep dive while viewing, but also post-viewing wormholes, and I love feeling like I know a lot about something after I watch. They are a college course comprised of a lecture and a study period. Pausing this one and reading about them, I realized pretty quickly that this wasn't going to be a "who is Sun Ra" educational experience. It reminded me a bit of the Leon Russell doc in it's layout….mostly live stuff, interspersed with some speaking. Very cool that an innovative collective like this was documented and fully captured in full glory while Sun Ra himself was still alive. I'm happy to hear that the Sun Ra house in Philly is still there, and I guess that's where all the amazing costumes are. I was thinking about how great a Sun Ra art exhibit would be and it's already happened. I hope to see if someday. I would also purchase a book of Sun Ra quotes…how about a Sun Ra coloring book? I love this anecdote that i found in my post-viewing wormhole…"What are you doing here?" Charles Mingus once asked him in the Village, and Sun Ra replied that he came downtown quite often. "No," Mingus said. "I mean what are you doing on Earth?" This article in The Believer about their legacy was pretty interesting too. https://believermag.com/logger/angels-and-demons-at-play/ Also fascinating, the director Robert Mugge. His filmography is filled with amazingly eclectic stuff and I need to watch it all. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member It's just a pleasure to see Sun Ra in action, whether he's singing on a rooftop with a twelve piece band of funky space musicians, walking the halls of the Egyptian wing at a Philadelphia museum or simply spouting philosophy at a keyboard in his own home. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Something was seriously wrong with this guy's brain, but he made some really awesome music and was always trying new things. But seriously, wtf? Pink Hair, gold lame hair net, purple beard drawn on, and shiny gold eye mask all covered in egyptian robes? Yikes. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews
