Thiagarajan Kumararaja's unstable mix of dark comedy, brutal thriller and Douglas Sirkian melodrama is shamelessly excessive but undeniably entertaining. Go to Full Review

The performances from the ensemble of actors are top notch. Vijay Sethupathi makes us empathize with his transwoman character of Shilpa with his restraint and sensitivity. Go to Full Review

Suprateek A 09/01/2023 After waiting for so many years I finally watched the Thyagaraja Kumararaja flick Super deluxe. Was it worth the wait? OH HELL YEAH BABY! My god what did I just see? I seriously can't get over this film, it was perfection. Time to get to the details. First of all the actors, man this film is acting masterclass, like every single actor hit it out of the park, especially Vijay Sethupathi as Shilpa and the kid who played Raasu Kutti, their duo just stole my heart, it was so wholesome. Fahad Fasil and Samantha lent an unexpected laugh riot, Ramyakrishna and Mysskin were pretty phenomenal too. All the 5 teenagers were fantastic. Special mention to Bagavathi Perumal as Berlin because my god I couldn't stand him, no doubt Berlin will go down as one of the most iconic antagonists ever! Technically too this film is a masterpiece. The framing and staging were so phenomenal effectively conveying the character's emotions. The usage of blue and red throughout the film has been done really well. The background score was pretty amazing, and the way TK utilised silence is just AHHHHH ,chef's kiss. Alright spoilers from here. IRONY IRONY IRONY , I love it. The irony in this film is so beautiful. The irony isn't restricted just for humor and has more dimensions. For example the irony in Mugil's story, he was shitting about the system throughout the film but when the agent of the system-Berlin-came into the picture he surrendered to that very system. Mugil forced his wife to have sex with Berlin but had a problem when she did the same thing with her ex-boyfriend, man the characters are all so amazing. Similarly everyone used to go to Arputham when their family members were in danger instead of going to the hospital, but when his son was in a critical stage he was taken to the hospital. The themes of alienation ,sex and sexual orientation have been handled in a very mature way. Shilpa's story supporting the trans community, Vaembu's story displaying a dysfunctional marriage, Leela's story bringing up a perspective about the adult film industry which everyone chooses to ignore. Every single story has something alien according to the people around them-Shilpa, Leela ,the dead body, an actual alien. The best out of them all has to be Shilpa's story, thanks to the great writing as well as VJ's phenomenal performance, showing the vulnerable state of trans women in our current society is quite heart breaking to say the least. A special mention to the scene where Raasu Kutti walks upto Shilpa during the beginning of the film. IT WAS SO WHOLESOME. Everybody disowns Shilpa in that scene, which breaks her heart but then her son comes upto her and smiles at her, which ignites a sense of hope in Shilpa-visual storytelling at it's best. As for Raasu Kutti all he ever wanted was his father, he didn't care if his dad was a woman he was just happy. In conclusion all I would like to say is that Super Deluxe is a rare gem of Indian cinema and we have to celebrate it as much as we can. See more 04/20/2022 This was a very good movie. Was about 3 hours long but didn't feel like it, enjoyed thoroughly. All the actors did very good and dark comedy was at its best See more 07/18/2020 This movie sucks. Yes, the actors were good. But the plot is just stupid. It started good and interesting but went downhill as you go along. See more 05/24/2020 I was just blown away after seeing this movie... Just can't find words to describe this movie. See more 03/09/2020 The film comprises four intersecting stories. An unhappy woman has a sexual encounter with a former lover who dies during the act; a father, who left home suddenly 7 years prior, returns as a transgender woman; four boys are watching a porno when one of them discovers his mother is the star, and a man who believes he is the sole survivor of a tsunami believes he has the power to heal people. I loved this film. It reminded me a lot of two other films I really liked: Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia and Robert Altman's Short Cuts. In this film, the stories rely on the coincidences that connect them. The stories are all good. I really liked the story of the woman who cheated on her husband. It is hilarious dark humor, and their story made me laugh throughout most of it but also evolves as a fairly sweet story of a relationship undergoing a serious trial. The most poignant story is the one with the transgender woman who has to deal with the stigma of her own family and the local community. The stories at first look are rather outlandish, but there is a lot of emotional heft and depth to their messages, and they intersect in very interesting ways. I found myself anxiously waiting to see what connection was coming but also getting completely absorbed into the stories. And laughing. A lot. I love the score, and the acting is strong, particularly by the husband and wife and the man who plays the transgender woman. Big thumbs up for a film that is not perfect but one that is thoroughly entertaining. See more 11/12/2019 Nice Movie Massive Score See more Read all reviews
