See more Nathan J. @NathanDirector May 9 Rated: 4.5/10 ⭐️ I went in curious about this 80s spin-off, but the tone threw me. It’s more fantasy fairy tale than Superman adventure, so I had to reset expectations fast. What Worked: • Goldsmith’s score – Genuinely heroic and sweeping. It felt bigger than the film and carried scenes for me. • Helen Slater – She brings real heart to Kara. I bought her sincerity, and she nails the fish-out-of-water bits. • Cinematography – The practical effects and Argo City mattes look good for 1984. I liked the chunky model sets and storybook widescreens. What Didn't: • The Selena subplot really dragged for me. The magic/love-potion stuff felt small and silly. • Tone is all over the place. Campy, serious, kids’ fantasy – it never gelled for me. • No Reeve cameo made it feel disconnected. I missed that grounding. The plot is literally Supergirl has to go save her family and her loved ones from imminent danger, but in the process she stops to go to school, and try to fit in and change the dynamics of the school. Like, what? The acting performances are ridiculously over-the-top, and the effects just absolutely horrible. Also, the villain is a witch. Only diehard completionists trying to watch all of the Superman films should check this out.
