Critics Consensus

The effects are cheesy, the story is aimless, and Supergirl's wide-eyed, cheery heroine simply isn't interesting.

Randy A. Salas Minneapolis Star Tribune Supergirl is no cinema classic, mostly because half the cast plays it straight while the rest go for camp. Jun 28, 2025 Full Review David Denby New York Magazine/Vulture The movie has terrible schlocky effects -- red whirlpools and flying plastic -- but it's consistently funny. Dan S. Such a waste of a great character! Poorly written and bad effects. Not many redeeming qualities other than it is Supergirl Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/29/25 Full Review CaptainBoulder T No words can describe how much I hate this movie, it's incredibly boring and corny. This movie doesn't even feel real Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/22/25 Full Review DanTheMan 2 More of a misguided Disney send-up than a Superman film, Supergirl suffers from an extreme case of poor internal logic and a plot that feels as if it were procedurally generated, lacking in any sense of urgency. The Girl of Steel herself spends way too much time frolicking about the countryside when it's been established very early on that her city will die in a few days. It's a truly bizarre choice for a story. The script is the film's main handicap, a lead weight that prevents it from ever taking off as it should. Instead of embracing the story's potential for tongue-in-cheek kitsch, director Jeannot Szwarc tried to turn it into a lyrical fantasy and got stuck somewhere in the middle. He's so determined to keep things wholesome that he forgets to make the film funny, exciting or innovatively spectacular. Some of the more complex action scenes are intense, but numerous scenes drag on far too long. You can feel the pacing throughout; time is slowly ticking by, and you are consciously aware of it as the film offers up too many fish-out-of-water moments of supposed comedy rather than character development or action. Helen Slater is terribly sweet as Kal-El's cousin, but constantly tilts her head and widens her eyes to convey emotion with all the range of a plank of wood; her hammy co-stars certainly don't help matters. The real saving grace is unquestionably Marc McClure's Jimmy Olsen, despite having little to do, because the film wastes its numerous other talented cast members with poor dialogue and creepy actions; he's the only one to get off relatively unscathed. Despite a decent Jerry Goldsmith score that somewhat elevates the proceedings, Supergirl is a tough watch anyway you edit it, lacking in ambition and emotional resonance that made the original Reeve film so exceptional. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/20/25 Full Review Gabe G. I’ve never seen a movie where all the characters’ motivations make less sense. The central conflict is that Faye Dunaway wants to master black magic so she creates a love potion for a landscaper sleeps with her - and she gets mad because he thinks Supergirl is pretty. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/20/25 Full Review thiago s Filme fraco, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas são fracas, a história é fraca, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, os personagens são fracos, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/10/25 Full Review Corey J I'm honestly still not sure what this was. While I can appreciate things we've learned from other Superman movies being implemented without new explanation for it but it totally ignored how massive of a deal it would be that another Kryptonian with a giant S on their chest has arrived on earth. The villain's motivation was pretty abysmal and I can't even imagine that it was even viewed as solid in 1984 when it came out. Half of the performances tried to be serious while others were entirely campy. Nothing in this movie worked. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/03/25 Full Review Read all reviews
