What sends Gunn’s “Superman” soaring over redundancy and overkill is the affection he feels for the Man of Steel in Corenswet’s uncalculated, cynicism-free portrait. Supie isn’t afraid to show his heart. He calls it the new punk rock. Maybe he’s right.

Gunn at his worst wears his films’ emotions so openly on his sleeve that you feel how he’s trying to make you feel (see: GOTG 3). Gunn at his best is Superman—so full of heart, so pure, so human. Not a stretch to say this is the best superhero movie of the decade so far (best live action by a Kansas country mile).

Wonderful chemistry from Clark/Lois grounds the action. Making Lex a tech bro media manipulator made sense along with updating the newsroom to a more digital focus. The story of nature/nurture - esp with the birth parent reveal - was so sweet and affirming. Great action, fun, colorful cinematography and music.
