Variety Staff Variety Some 97 minutes of well-farced escapism is offered in Susan Slept Here. Mar 26, 2009 Full Review New York Times On the whole, "Susan Slept Here" remains as familiar as a summer breeze, but not nearly as refreshing. Aug 8, 2006 Full Review Geoff Andrew Time Out This started life as a Broadway comedy and remains very theatrical, despite Tashlin's efforts to goose it into life ... Jun 24, 2006 Full Review Clyde Gilmour Maclean's Magazine Hollywood pictures, I still doggedly maintain, are slowly improving on the average, but I couldn't clinch the argument by citing the present specimen. It's a coy, leering and overdrawn comedy. Dec 10, 2019 Full Review TV Guide It's a surprisingly bad outing considering all the talent involved. Rated: 2/5 May 27, 2015 Full Review John Beifuss Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN) One scene finds Debbie Reynolds using the golden head of the trademarked Oscar statuette as a makeshift hammer to crack walnuts. In Hollywood, that may have been as shocking as the sight of the desecrated statue of the Virgin Mary in 'The Exorcist.' Rated: 3.5/4 Mar 15, 2011 Full Review Read all reviews

Jay W Let me just tell you the premise of this film. A 40-year-old Hollywood writer has a 17-year-old brought to his house against her will. He then marries this minor, but it is OK because she is totally into it. Doesn't this sound like a bad self-insert fan fiction? But somehow a studio greenlighted this film and here we have it. A romance with a minor that has a 28-year age gap between our two leads. Even if I avoided the massive elephant in the room, I don't believe the romantic chemistry of our two leads even for a second. How can I buy their romance when most of it is happening as a dream sequence? The movie can be funny at times, and it has some nice songs. But overall...ewwwww. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/02/25 Full Review Russ G I'm sure that later in her career, Miss Reynolds had wished she could have burned every print and negative of this PoS. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/28/24 Full Review Steve D Has not aged well at all. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/27/23 Full Review Frances H I saw this flick a long time ago, I thought it was funny, but looking at it now, about 50 years later, it strikes me as just not morally right, especially since in reality, Dick Powell was 50, not the age he was supposed to be--35, and he looked more like 60. Debbie Reynolds was supposed to be 17 and in reality was 22. The age difference is just too much to be anything but obscene. And for the police to leave a 17 year old with a man even 35 is downright immoral, too! The plot of this whole movie is just wrong! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/02/19 Full Review Audience Member I know this movie was "of its time " but even then men over 30 who got involved with 17 year old girls, " written consent of her mother " or not, all nice and legal in Vegas or not, were considered a little creepy. In 2019, Debbie Reynolds slavishly cleaning, reciting drink recipes to prove her "worth" and mock barking when the guy mentions a little dog is downright stomach turning. Yuck Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review ashley h Susan Slept Here is fun film. It is about a screenwriter who is working on a script about juvenile delinquency. Dick Powell and Debbie Reynolds give amazing performances. The screenplay is good but a little slow in places. Frank Tashlin did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the humor and drama. Susan Slept Here is a must see. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
