Critics Consensus

Although its second half is difficult to digest, Swallowed is an admirably unusual -- and overall effective -- mixture of body horror and romance.

Leslie Felperin Guardian Where a viewer might expect a few more layers of symbolism and subtext to enrich the film, it turns out there’s not really anything here other than a juvenile desire to shock and scandalise. Rated: 2/5 Apr 18, 2023 Full Review Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News A lean and mean horror film with a[n] LGBTQ twist and solid performances and taut direction. Rated: 3/4 Mar 8, 2023 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times A memorably intense experience, with sharp points to make about how the lives of outsiders and outlaws can tip in an instant into sloppy chaos. Feb 17, 2023 Full Review Kat Halstead Common Sense Media Swallowed relies heavily on both the narrative arc and the acting of Koch as Benjamin to keep the unruly tonal shifts on target, while Jena Malone's powerful urgency picks up the pace when things start to slump. Rated: 3/5 Sep 25, 2023 Full Review Alan Jones Radio Times Though it is rather long-winded and some moments prove difficult to swallow, this unsettling psychodrama is both atmospheric and creepy, and boasts a truly startling conclusion. Rated: 3/5 Sep 21, 2023 Full Review Sharai Bohannon Horror Movie Blog Swallowed is an indie film that promised us Queerness, body horror, Jena Malone, and Mark Patton. However, it delivers tension, discomfort, and so much more. I expected it to be a fine film and was pleasantly surprised from the moment I hit play. Aug 14, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Jonah K a weird, less than ideal scenario with a good main performance. overstays it’s welcome though, by a lot. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/31/24 Full Review Sam G Such a boring movie, so much Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/22/24 Full Review Craig B Swallowed is a difficult movie to describe...and recommend, for that matter. It certainly is an intriguing movie with solid performances Although the movie is described as a 'body horror', whilst there are some unsettling scenes, it's not what you would describe as a movie with overly disturbing scenes. Thankfully, the more confronting scenes are not too 'in your face' from a visual perspective, leaving it to the viewer's imagination to fill in the blanks. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/01/24 Full Review Thom G It's a commendable film within its genre, with well-executed characters and acting, and the subtle or explicit exploration of homosexuality adds an underappreciated but welcome dimension. However, I was somewhat disappointed because it's not a horror movie per se, but rather leans more towards being a thriller or drama Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/26/24 Full Review LaFrance M Weak writing with inflated expectations from the so-called professional critics made this movie land way shorter of where I hoped it would be. The plot twists are inexistant. The "gore" or "shocking" is inexistant (beside a couple shots of hairy butts and fake penis props. Jena Malone is annoying as poorly directed - at one moment some hard core drug lord, the next one an empathetic protector arguing with a less than scary and rather pathetic "boss". We don't explore the yet promising story of "hallucinogenic bugs" which was by far the most interesting plot that this movie wrote in, and toss it aside to revert to some half hearted revenge with a tweezer. Verdict: watchable while completing household duties like ironing or doing taxes. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/24/23 Full Review Dan S Well, qeerness and representation aside, the movie doesn't offers that much. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/24/23 Full Review Read all reviews
