Critics Consensus

Glossy to a fault, Swiped packages its true events as a rote reenactment instead of delivering the feminist story it could have been.

Robert Levin Newsday It's far too shallow of a movie for such an important subject. Rated: 2/4 Sep 20, 2025 Full Review Adrian Horton Guardian The history of how online dating went from deeply uncool to de rigueur is one worth telling, and Swiped’s methods, corny and contrived as they can be, are proficient enough to do it. Rated: 3/5 Sep 19, 2025 Full Review Alissa Wilkinson New York Times Swiped aims to explore the difficulties of being a woman in a man’s world, from workplaces to the internet more widely. It does so in broad strokes with predictable characterization. Sep 19, 2025 Full Review Bill Newcott The Saturday Evening Post I do hereby challenge every single male in any traditionally male profession to sit through Swiped...and not see shades of their own workplace, and maybe even themselves. Rated: 4/5 Oct 11, 2025 Full Review Wilson Kwong Film Inquiry What's surprising about Swiped isn’t how entertaining it is as a commercial film, but how it utilizes its commercialization to repackage a story about sexism in a relatively digestible fashion. Oct 8, 2025 Full Review Dustin Rowles Pajiba won’t quibble with the positive message, although I will with the film’s generic and formulaic approach. Oct 7, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Meta U Yes... let’s make a movie about a woman in tech who fought against all odds—and was adamantly against having a movie made about her. You’d think Lily James would’ve learned her lesson after the Pamela Anderson story. This marks the second time she’s portrayed a woman who explicitly did not want their life dramatized, and she shows no signs of stopping. That’s “girl power” for you. From Lily James’ laughable accent to the absurd plot, it feels like the film was written and directed by a man trying to mansplain gender inequality to preschoolers. I don’t want my money back—I want the hours of my life back. It’s shameful that such an important topic was handled so poorly. Even more shameful: it was done without the actual woman’s permission. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/08/25 Full Review Serena C. It was interesting, relatable, and it portrayed an all too common toxic relationship. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/05/25 Full Review Elena B Very inspirational and nicely catching that transitional phase from part of the group to the wake up call of not being part of it, being crushed down and building all ones confidence back up Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/05/25 Full Review kavishka k 9/10: This is the CEO Movie We Deserved. More Women in Power, Please! Reviewer: M.B. (25), United States Date: 28 September 2025 I went into Swiped expecting a glossy biopic about dating apps, but what I got was a sharp, inspiring story about resilience and true power. Lily James’s portrayal of Whitney Wolfe Herd is absolutely electrifying. The film doesn't shy away from the brutal, toxic "bro culture" she had to endure at her previous company. Watching those scenes was tough, but it made her pivot—her decision to stop fighting the system and instead build a better one—incredibly satisfying. The movie makes it clear that her success with Bumble wasn't luck; it was the result of genius-level marketing, fierce ambition, and a refusal to be silenced. This wasn't a story of a woman getting a lucky break; it was a story of a woman taking calculated risks, facing down industry giants, and winning on her own terms. As a 25-year-old guy, I find this incredibly refreshing and inspiring. We are in a time where we need to see successful female founders and executives portrayed this realistically—messy, driven, and unapologetically powerful. The movie celebrates ambition without ever reducing the main character to a caricature. If Hollywood wants to keep making biopics, this is the blueprint. Highly recommended. Go see the woman-led empire built from scratch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/04/25 Full Review Craig K I enjoyed this movie. It sends a positive message about hard work, perseverance, and standing up for your values. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/27/25 Full Review Patrick C SWIPED tells the story of how the Tinder app began and then quickly blew up while changing the dating (or hook up) scene all together. Lily James plays Whitney Wolfe, a young woman who opens the film, pitching her humanitarian idea to tech entrepreneurs who have no interest in her endeavor. While waiting on her valet, she meets Sean Rad (Ben Schnetzer) who asks her to pitch him while they're both waiting. Impressed with her ambition rather than her goal, he gives her his card to contact him and she does so the next day. After a brief impromptu lunch with clients he's trying to sell on another of his products, Whitney is soon hired. Sean's company has their hands in a lot of different pies and the online dating company is the one Whitney latches onto. The film makes it clear she's the visionary behind the company's success, beating the pavement at college campuses to increase their number of users. Once successful and after a bad relationship with a close friend of Sean and cofounder of the company Justin (Jackson White), Whitney is soon blackballed at the company. The story takes place primarily between 2012-2015 (before the Me Too movement) so this oozes with "toxic masculinity". Wolfe didn't participate in the making of this film due to a NDA she signed upon her separation from Tinder, so it's difficult to separate fact from fiction. Case in point: her best friend in the film Tisha (Myha'la) is a completely fictional character and was only casted because she's a black, female. I mean, why else would you need to create this character otherwise, right? While I've always been a fan of James' work, her last 2 outings have been misses (this and RELAY). Sometimes quality suffers when you're as busy as she is so hopefully she can get on track again with her next role. Otherwise, the story here is a very basic, made-for-TV movie vibe and while this is only one perspective of what happened to Whitney, I'd say she's done alright for herself during her post-Tinder years. Congrats to her for all of her success! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/26/25 Full Review Read all reviews
