Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times The Sword and the Sorcerer is so dominated by its special effects, its settings and locations, that it doesn't care much about character. Rated: 0.5/4 Jun 20, 2018 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com …well worth celebrating; fans of loin-cloth buffoonery may come to scoff, but Albert Pyun's The Sword and the Sorcerer delivers a robust, rollicking entertainment that’s a hoot from soup to nuts…endless rewatch potential if you're in the mood... Rated: 4/5 Nov 5, 2024 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Nothing could top John Boorman's superb 1981 achievement Excalibur, but say this about The Sword and the Sorcerer: It's a helluva lot more fun than the lumbering Conan the Barbarian. Rated: 2.5/4 Mar 20, 2022 Full Review Allison Rose FlickDirect The Sword and the Sorcerer starts off simple enough and, with the exceptions of the supernatural elements, could be a very plausible story. Rated: 3.5/5 Mar 14, 2022 Full Review Alan Ng Film Threat WhatThe Sword and the Sorcerer lacks in storytelling is made up for by pure adrenaline. Rated: 7/10 Jan 3, 2022 Full Review Ginger Varney L.A. Weekly God only knows how many millions of dollars got used in this miserable movie to get the least possible good out of them. Audience Member One of the many classic fantasy epics from the 1980s like Conan and Ladyhawke Titus Cromwell is an evil king that resurrects a dark sorcerer, Xusia of Delos to rule the civilized worlds A young boy is then given a triple-bladed sword, his name is Prince Talon who rediscovers his royal heritage His father was actually King Richard who was Cromwell's rival In the quest for revenge for his mother's death and the overthrown kingdom he finds a damsel in distress but a princess But he must also face witches, assassins, and dark magic Good production values, nice fantastic feel, although some of the music is a bit misguided and there's a budget restraint in many areas Not a lot of character to be honest Still for an old fantasy tale it's serviceable Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/23/24 Full Review Richard D It had potential but the script as a whole has implications of incest which the characters don't seem to care about. The main character is the rightful heir to the throne but his long-lost siblings are planning the revolution. The sword and the sorcerer are barely used. The sorcerer has a cool entrance but he is in disguise for most of the film. There are clear signs of missing and or deleted scenes. Also, the actors have no idea how to fight. Best part if the set pieces and art direction. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/28/23 Full Review Chris M Saw this in the theater when it came out. It remains one of the best films in the sword & sorcery genre'. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/10/23 Full Review Johnathon W Cheesy fantasy film that has not aged well. The cast delivers campy performances at best, though Richard Mull is nicely imposing as the Sorcerer, with some pretty cool make-up, even if he is underused (like the sword, for that matter). The story is nonsensical and you will find yourself confused over who the characters are. However, if you are able to watch it with a Rifftrax's commentary, makes for a fun watch, but not on its own. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/18/23 Full Review Carlos I Watched in memory of Pyun, as it was one of the few I hadn't seen yet. Surprisingly it didn't do it for me though. It's a decently fun fantasy flick, that's just adult enough to keep pubescent boys happy, but it lacks the polish or sophistication of something like Conan or hell even Beast master...
