Robert Abele Los Angeles Times For the most part this is a clunky hodgepodge of old-fashioned warrior tropes, awkward humor, five-alarm melodrama and CGI-dependent 21st century action filmmaking ... Dec 8, 2016 Full Review Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times This nostalgic nod to the Chinese magic-and-martial arts genre known as wuxia mixes love story and clan war with equal amounts of silliness and heart. Dec 8, 2016 Full Review Mark Jenkins Washington Post The emphasis is on deep-focus 3-D spectacle, not psychology. Rated: 2.5/4 Dec 8, 2016 Full Review Andrew Parker The Gate Is it kind of silly? That goes almost without saying. Was I grinning from ear to ear throughout? Absolutely. Aug 28, 2018 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand ... evokes the romantic chivalry of the wuxia genre in a lavish, colorful spectacle awash in wirework action and CGI-enhanced sets and settings. Jun 14, 2017 Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film Sword Master will hypnotise viewers new to the genre who are easily distracted by shiny things, and Yiyan Jiang's performance is almost worth the price of admission on it own, but martial arts aficionados are likely to be disappointed. Audience Member The characters are engaging, though the pacing is slow and the action is pretty anticlimactic. More or less a fun film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member The obnoxious emphasis on 3D of this film made me really one to give up watching several times, but its sincere adherence to Gu Long's original characters and writing style helped me to stay until the end. The cheap 3D effects of this film only highlight Derek Yee's disappointing negligence about settings and cinematography. Thankfully, Gu Long's spirit of "jianghu", of Chinese-style unrequited love, of existentialist heroism was kept intact with beautifully-built characters, slow pace of choreography, and simple plot. Of course, this film is far from a decent adaptation of Gu Long's novels, but at least it is watchable - a feat that has become more and more difficult of the modern Hong Kong cinema. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Sword Master's plot development had me so enthralled I did not realize how little action their was until the ending. A perfection execution of story that adequately told every characters side without wasting the viewers time Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Forget the haters; the Kung Fu film snobs hung up on the past. This movie has heart. Colorful and romantic share the table with fable and martial arts. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Visually delightful. Great action. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Only the opening scene is not bad. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews
