Two years ago, retired CIA agent Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson) used his "particular set of skills" to rescue his daughter, Kim (Maggie Grace), from kidnappers. Since then, Kim has been learning self-defense from her father, and Bryan has been on a personal mission to reunite with his ex-wife (Famke Janssen). In Istanbul, Bryan and his family cross paths with Murad (Rade Serbedzija), whose son died at Bryan's hand during Kim's rescue. Murad wants revenge, and he'll stop at nothing to get it.

Taken 2 is largely bereft of the kinetic thrills -- and surprises -- that made the original a hit.

Tim Grierson Deadspin "Taken 2" is really, really goofy -- it's even goofier because it thinks it's about the futility of vengeance -- but Liam Neeson almost makes you buy it. Feb 12, 2013 Full Review Andrew O'Hehir Salon.com A meta-American movie, a Godardian spoof of the whole genre, an attempt to see how stupid and insulting a motion picture can be and still be a big hit. Oct 7, 2012 Full Review Dana Stevens Slate So lazily put together that it relies on flashbacks from its predecessor for the majority of its character development. Oct 5, 2012 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Besson and Megaton have delivered a sequel that fails in every way to live up to its predecessor. Rated: 1/4 Sep 23, 2022 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies Unfortunately this movie just gives us more of the same but at a much lower and lazier production level. Blu B Acting isn't bad and defintely the best thing here. Famke is solid and probably the best thing here. Daughter isn't bad either and nice to see her ahve a bigger part in theory but the choices they make with her are just stupid at times. Nesson isn't bad either but gets weighed down by the dumb action at times. The have decent chemistry together though. The villians aren't good here and are incredibly weak. The bad guys motivations are great on paper but he has no prescene and he blends in almost with the rest of the goons. The music is okay. It's pretty much the same stuff from the first but used way too much. Everything else isn't that good here. The start of this is good but it just devolves once they go to Istanbul. The location isn't that memorable either and the direction is ok at best subpar at worse. The biggest problem here is the sex trafficking world we were immersed in is completely gone here. And so is the smart mystery. What's here this time is just a dumb action movie plot and it clearly shows. The action is so over the top, farfetched, and stupid. Where the first was brutal, smart, and had a purpose, this just drags, subpar editing during those fights/action and doesn't really add much but to lengthen the runtime enough for theatrical release. She can't drive and failed the test but can outrun mercenary gunman in a foreign country in a car she's never driven before under gunfire....are you kidding me. And this is the big action showpiece. The final fight is a hand to hand fight with a generic goon and waves of mercenaries that feel like they are unneedly fast edited, drag, and just get boring. Some of the dungeon/interior scenes are so dark you can barely see and very dull and lifeless to look at. Than add a bunch of farfetched moments like the daughter throwing hail mary live grenades, not rescuing his wife when he had the chance and leaving her. Just take out the other goons. You literally at the end take out dozens. And none of the action pieces really stand out at all or are just farfetched. I did like the happy ending a bit though. Skip this and just stay with the first one. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/18/25 Full Review Ralph R Taken 2 brings back Liam Neeson as Bryan Mills, and while it does not hit the same level of intensity as the first movie, it delivers a solid follow-up with a revenge-driven plot. This time around, the villains have more depth, making the conflict feel more personal and engaging. The story does a good job of tying up loose ends from the first film while keeping the stakes high. There are a few moments that feel a little too convenient, but overall, the pacing keeps things moving, even if the first act stretches a bit longer than necessary. The directing is decent, keeping the action tight and the tension high, though some of the editing choices make certain scenes feel choppy. The cinematography captures the atmosphere of Istanbul well, adding a fresh backdrop that sets it apart from the first movie. The action sequences are well-executed, especially the car chase, which stands out as one of the film’s more exciting moments. There are a few moments where logic takes a backseat, but that is expected in this kind of action film. Liam Neeson once again delivers as the no-nonsense ex-CIA operative, bringing the same presence that made him so great in the first movie. Maggie Grace gets more to do this time around, which adds some nice character growth, while Famke Janssen provides solid support. The villains are more developed compared to the first film, which adds a nice layer of tension. The script has its moments, especially with a few well-placed lines that add depth to the characters, but there are also some awkward or forced moments that do not quite land. The score does its job, keeping the tension in check and elevating the action scenes, but it is not particularly memorable. Sound design plays an important role in the film’s atmosphere, especially during key sequences like the chase scenes and fights. Overall, Taken 2 does not surpass the original, but it is still an enjoyable watch with plenty of action, a solid revenge story, and a few good character moments. If you liked the first one, you will probably have a good time with this one too. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/12/25 Full Review Robert Andrew F Critics can scoff and make fun of this film as much as they like. When you watch a film like this, you know what you're going to get. If people are looking for Shakespeare, Hamlet, Henry V, and other works are there for them. In THIS film, Liam Neeson commands the screen with ease. The movie is filled with nail-biting suspense and action. I enjoyed it immensely. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/21/25 Full Review L D The only thing impressive about this movie are the number of stereotypes and action movie tropes they could cram into this disgrace of a sequel. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/08/24 Full Review William B It dealt with the other side of the story, and I personally thought it was a decent film. I think it was better than the first one.
