Jodi (Ava Michelle) has always been the tallest girl in school -- and she's always been uncomfortable with it. After slouching her way through life for 16 years and being made fun of by classmates, Jodi meets Stig (Luke Eisner), a seemingly perfect Swedish foreign exchange student who's even taller than she is. Jodi's new crush turns her world upside down and throws her into a surprising love triangle, but with the help of her two best friends (Griffin Gluck, Anjelika Washington) as well as her beauty queen sister Harper (Sabrina Carpenter), Jodi comes to realize that she's far more than her insecurities about her appearance have led her to believe. TALL GIRL, director Nzingha Stewart's first feature film, is a heartfelt and hilarious coming-of-age story about finding the confidence to stop slouching and stand tall.

While charming at times, Tall Girl is mostly an uninspired teen comedy that fails to bring anything new to the genre.

On the whole, it's a charming movie about the mental toll of insecurity that also has major blind spots. Go to Full Review

From a one-note mean girl stereotype to a complete disinterest in how social media shapes the lives of teens, Sam Wolfson's lackluster script fails to bring anything new or timely to the teen rom-com table. Go to Full Review

Trina F 4d I REALLY enjoyed this movie. Several laugh out loud parts and a touching ending. I was hesitant to watch it, given the low ratings, but after watching it with my daughter, we both couldn't believe it got low ratings. I would even want to see it again soon and would want to own it. See more BadNews R @TheMovieSearch Sep 12 Tall Girl is a Netflix original film starring Ava Michelle as Jodi, and to be honest, this is really the only project she’s known for so far. Going into it, I had some curiosity, but the film left me with mixed feelings. It wasn’t outright horrible, but it also wasn’t great. For a movie that managed to spawn a sequel, it’s surprising because the first installment is really only borderline watchable—hovering between a mediocre teen romance and a slightly disastrous mess. The story itself is simple: Jodi, a high school student, struggles with being taller than her peers and navigates the typical teenage trials of love, bullying, and self-confidence. On paper, it sounds relatable, but in execution, the characters feel all over the place. There’s very little cohesion in how the story develops or how the characters interact, which makes it hard to care deeply about anyone besides the leads. Speaking of the leads, Griffin Gluck as Jack is honestly the strongest part of the movie. His performance shows credibility and charm, and he has the acting chops to hold scenes together. This is especially evident when you compare him to the rest of the cast, who often feel flat or underdeveloped. Ava Michelle does her best with Jodi, but the character lacks depth and is surrounded by storylines that feel disjointed. Sabrina Carpenter’s Harper is another capable actor, but her role is largely sidelined, leaving her character feeling irrelevant to the overall plot. The film’s approach to bullying and teenage romance is typical of 90s teen comedies, but with a modern twist that doesn’t always work. The back-and-forth focus on whether Jodi will end up with the foreign exchange student, her best friend, or someone else feels predictable and unnecessarily complicated. Instead of leaning into a nostalgic 90s feel, which could have made the story more charming and lighthearted, the modern updates make it feel forced and diminish the movie’s appeal. In summary, Tall Girl is a film with potential but only delivers sporadically. A few performances stand out, particularly Griffin Gluck’s, and Ava Michelle tries to bring heart to her role. However, inconsistent writing, underdeveloped characters, and a story that drifts between clichés make it hard to fully recommend. If you’re looking for a casual, low-stakes teen romance, it’s worth a watch—but don’t expect it to be memorable or groundbreaking. See more Lachon J Apr 20 I love a underdog movie. She made me want to learn more about the character's backstory and present daylife. To bad the writer & director obviously failed out of film school. Was this some nepobaby's project?
