David Lamble Bay Area Reporter Director Ed Aldridge scoured Australia to find enough openly queer board-jockeys to populate his hilarious account of an adolescent struggling to come out (to himself) and exit a randy little island community. Audience Member i love the story line and the actor who plays midget is really good! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Dreadful. horrible acting, terrible story arc, terrible camera work. I wiah id never seen it tbh. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Tan Lines is like a jumbled mess of puzzle pieces that just don't fit together well at all. The only redeeming qualities are the music and the hot guys. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member It's just sad to see how many people says that 'Shelter' (another gay-surf themed movie) is the best gay movie of all time when it's obvious that took too many elements from this film. It's a more elaborate film, with better storyline and somewhat better performances. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member "Tan Lines" probably refers to Midget (Jack Baxter) who beds Cass (Daniel O'Leary) and Lucy Minter (Alice) so they enjoy his surfer bod. He's coming to terms with his homosexuality and has to experiment. Too bad, the movie diverts into subplots we don't need. It's a strange hybrid of a drama: low-brow comedy, erotic sexual scenes, and family drama. I liked the dialogue which seems real and sometimes funny. An older women checks out Midget, "Nice ass!" Her friend replies, "If he wasn't gay, I'd jump him in a second." I suspect some of the subplots are to lengthen the movie but they don't make sense. We don't care about the older town residents trying to recapture their libidos. Alice's mother who looks like Edith Massey from a John Waters' comedy is weird. Lucy Minter's role is underwritten as Alice--she comes across as daft. WTF is going on with Midget's mother? Jed Clarke is horrible as Cass' brother, Daniel, and I winced everytime he spoke. The two leads Jack Baxter and Daniel O'Leary are excellent as Midget and Cassidy respectively. They make this movie worth watching, both as interesting actors and during their erotic scenes. But, I couldn't detect any tan lines when they strip. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member This was one messed up film.
