victor o Brie Larson's popularity as Captain Marvel has me interested in some of her works as I found this movie. I did not know what to think about a movie with such a simple title and the only other performer I recognized being Rooney Mara. Not a fan of hers but neither was I of Brie Larson, but I was bored and wanted to check this out. Fernanda, a high school senior is ready to start the final term of her boarding school known as Tanner Hall. There she and her select group of her friends welcome an old friend of hers from her child by the name of Victoria. An innocent event from their childhood has given Fernanda a cynical view of humanity and left her cautious and fearful of shame. Victoria is a troublemaker who seems to have no conscience as Fernanda and her two other friends Lucasta and Kate experience their final year in high school with their newest friend. Lucasta being a shy tomboy uncertain about her life as the best friend of a boy. Kate being extremely flirtatious around her bored teacher. Fernanda herself being drawn to a handsome older man whose wife is a friend of her mother. Victoria being at odds with Fernanda's personality, clearly at odds with someone who is not her friend anymore. I saw this with no expectations and in the end, I left more than happy with what I saw. I have seen movies like this, Dead Poets Society and December Boys, coming of age stories of young boys on their way to manhood. This one was of young girls on the verge of womanhood as they dealt with growing up as well as truly becoming friends. It is not mentioned but this movie feels like a period piece with the cars, records, lack of modern tech like smart-phones and of course the clothes, I would say this was the late 1980s. I wonder if the writer and director drew inspiration from their own childhoods. It was nice watching Brie Larson as the cock tease but learns that her Lolita-like antics have a price. But it is Rooney Mara that does a great job in her role of a someone whose heart is torn as she learns about love and friendship in a way that is not innocent but also heartwarming. This was a nice film and I can see that some of these ladies have real talent as actresses. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review steve d The actors are great but there isn't enough story to carry the film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Well Rooney Mara stands out. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Although Rooney Mara has given some stellar performances recently, particularly her Oscar-nodded portrayal as Lisbeth Salander in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo", her first major movie role is flat and dull. Just like the rest of the characters in this teen drama. "Tanner Hall" was looking like it was trying to pass off as a fresh story about friendship and betrayal, however it was basically recycling 80's teen flicks that worked previously. Again, the characters don't have much going for them; they seemed cardboard and bland. If "Tanner Hall" was a featured on Lifetime Movie Network as an original movie, then it just might work. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member If you just have a look at the plot and the front cover it looks like a movie that I would usually enjoy. It's been a few months since I saw it now and I can't really remember anything from watching it which just proves that it's easily forgotten. It wasn't at all as good as I'd expected it to be, there was nothing original about it and it's a shame to say, but it's just the same as any other boarding school coming-of-age story out there. This tells you nothing new and overall, you won't remember it the next day. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Mildly entertaining. Peter Rainer Christian Science Monitor Codirectors Francesca Gregorini and Tatiana von Furstenberg work up some believable, easygoing rapport between the young actresses, but since the story line is hackneyed, it's rapport in a vacuum. Rated: C+ Sep 15, 2011 Full Review Perri Nemiroff Shockya.com A few moments pack some power, but the overall experience is underwhelming and a bit boring. No amount of pretty pictures has the power to fix the mess that is this script. Rated: 2/5 Sep 9, 2011 Full Review Andy Webster New York Times Rarely rises above the generic, though its atmosphere of coddled young people indulging themselves in opulent surroundings is palpably authentic. Jan 9, 2019 Full Review Cole Smithey ColeSmithey.com A cinematic cocktail blended from the contents of a suburban medicine cabinet, "Tanner Hall" is a girls-boarding-school movie that could bring up the bile in more than a few throats. Rated: D+ Sep 14, 2011 Full Review David Noh Film Journal International Entertaining but sometimes sophomoric coming-of-age drama about a gaggle of nice and not-so-nice rich girls at a boarding school, boasting star Rooney Mara before her Social Network/Dragon Tattoo coups.
