Cath Clarke Guardian The film is in fact a supremely confident genre dice and splice from the Boukhermas: a social realist body-horror black comedy with elements of coming-of-age drama. Rated: 3/5 Aug 3, 2021 Full Review Kat Hughes THN A well thought through subversion of the usual werewolf movie, Teddy presents some ingenious ideas and offers proof that an old dog can learn new tricks. Rated: 4/5 Aug 7, 2021 Full Review Matt Donato What To Watch 'Teddy' is a defanged werewolf tale that tries to combine coming-of-age angst with quirky comedy and a horror story in there somewhere, none of which shine particularly bright. Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 5, 2021 Full Review Daniel Gorman In Review Online Thankfully, the Boukhermas have a knack for squirm-inducing body horror ... and a colorful cast of characters to keep the movie speeding along to its forgone conclusion. Aug 5, 2021 Full Review Hope Madden MaddWolf Thanks to Bajon and a strong ensemble around him, the film makes you feel something for an enemy you might rather just hate. Rated: 3.5 Aug 4, 2021 Full Review Andy Crump Paste Magazine Skin-crawling visuals are one reason why people watch horror...but...Teddy has a kinder soul than that, even if the climax can be described in a word as an "abattoir." Hugo S A small French town is being threatened by wolves attacking the local community. Teddy, the most rebellious boy in town, is scratched by one of these beasts and his body undergoes grotesque changes. A metamorphosis indicating the young man is turning into a werewolf. "Teddy" is a body horror movie with dark humour and an unpretentious storyline. The simplicity of its plot asks the audience to focus on the chaotic transformation of its main character. Dramatic and hilarious! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/05/23 Full Review brad p Werewolf Movie ‘Teddy' Highlights Growing Pains with Humor and Minimalism Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member The majority of this movie is more a coming-of-age drama from the point of view of an outsider getting left behind by the world. The wolf bite and subsequent transformation are only one thread in Teddy's life, as viewers get more than a glimpse into his difficulties at home, at work and in his love life. Anthony Bajon is electric as Teddy and sells the character's complex emotional state throughout. He is also the glue that holds many of the scenes together, as the supporting cast range from under-used to an archetype. The movie then takes a excessively jarring change in tone in the final third and, though this comes to a head in a couple of shocking sequences, the change is so heavy that it doesn't feel like it is part of the same movie. Maybe the film would have felt more natural had it kept to a variation of one tone, but overall it is still a decent watch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Mallory B I didn't connect with the protagonist--not because he's unlikeable, but because he's ultimately not very interesting. The drama feels unfocused and superficial. Bad things happen to Teddy, and he reacts to them, but they all feel like isolated threads that don't connect and aren't explored in depth, so I don't get a clear idea of Teddy as a complex character undergoing any kind of real, internal transformation. And if you're wondering why I'm asking a werewolf movie to be a psychologically rich character study, it's because I don't know what else this movie is doing. Like most werewolf films I've seen, it doesn't deliver on the physical transformation or onscreen violence. Aside from one or two squirm-inducing body horror moments and some aftermath, there's little horror to see here. It's not a comedy, so no help there. All the focus is on the drama, which I didn't find very compelling. By the end of the movie, I'd stopped caring and I was disappointed. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 05/14/22 Full Review Audience Member Phenomenal. A bleak, darkly funny and gut wrenching film. The final 20 minutes were so good. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member i'll be honest - i missed a good chunk of what was going on in this film because I wasn't always watching the screen & I also don't speak french, so I can't really comment on the dialog too much. but I did catch a few pretty gnarly scenes that made me look away - I might have to watch this one again. looked like it could be a pretty promising body-horror film.
