Peter Bradshaw Guardian It's a remarkable story, but more complicated than this makes it sound. Rated: 3/5 Feb 22, 2019 Full Review Steven Sheehan The Digital Fix Lichtenstein's documentary tells the story of one of soul's rawest and sexiest voices. Rated: 8/10 Feb 6, 2020 Full Review Stephen Silver Splice Today The film is a success, for two reasons: It gets across Pendergrass' unique appeal, and it's full of great stories by musical old timers and the singer's other collaborators. (Philadelphia Weekly) Rated: 4/5 Nov 14, 2018 Full Review Kent Turner Film-Forward.com The film benefits greatly from the participation of the singer's mother, Ida, who is now 100-years-old, and his former dancers, backup singers, and colleagues. Audience Member Loved this ! Great story. I wish Teddy was still here making music. Love his songs. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member I loved it. Watched it over and over. So many gave credit to Harold Melvin for Teddy's voice and glad the truth was told. I'm sure there is much more to his story but this documentary Is a good summary of his success and struggle. I do believe God giveth and God taketh away and here is great example. Karma? To me he was the best and always will be. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I loved this movie. I can't believe I knew nothing about this incredible story before I saw the film. Its a fabulous recounting with many brilliant interviews and the words of Teddy himself as a result of years of recordings he made. It made ma laugh and cry and the music is sensational. Congratulations to the director for reminding us of this incredible talent. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Movie night with Iris. I'm a big Sound of Philadelphia fan, and Pendergrass is the real don of that clan. I learnt a lot from this documentary, but the darker side felt glossed over. Yes coming back from suicidal thoughts to perform at Live Aid is Hollywood fare. However, there's a really interesting story about getting tangled up in organised crime, where the film fears to tread. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review edward r 5 stars all the way, well worth a watch. Showing two extremes of human existance. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
