What to Know

Critics Consensus

Not only is the movie's juvenile dialogue unbearable for adults, but the turtles' dopey and casual attitude towards physical violence makes them poor kids' role models.

Gene Siskel Chicago Tribune I don't think my negative reaction is a case of a parent forgetting the sort of mindless entertainment that he himself enjoyed as a child; rather the turtle fights are more depressing than joyful. Rated: 1/4 Aug 6, 2014 Full Review Michael Sragow The New Yorker The artful grunge is gone -- and so's the edge. The whole movie is bright yet colorless Aug 6, 2014 Full Review Michael Wilmington Los Angeles Times More dialogue-heavy and somewhat less frenetic, this sequel is somewhat more to my own taste. Aug 6, 2014 Full Review Brian D. Johnson Maclean's Magazine Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles lI: The Secret Ooze is funnier, smarter and more entertaining than the original. Mar 26, 2019 Full Review John Robinson Santa Cruz Sentinel I found myself sort of liking the turtles and you have to admit that "Cowabunga dude," is the perfect response to every question. Joey H. Released on March 22nd 1991, less than one year after its predecessor, the Heroes in a Half-Shell are back by popular and bodacious demand. Directed by Michael Pressman and again released by New Line Cinema and Golden Harvest, the Turtles return once again to save the city of New York from the forces of Evil when they learn The Shredder is back and out for revenge with some new mutants of his own while also attempting to learn the secret of their own origins. The Turtle suits, animatronics for Splinter and the costumes for the new mutant characters Tokka and Rahzar are once again brought beautifully to life by the Jim Henson Creature Shop. The film is also dedicated in loving memory to Jim Henson who passed away shortly after the release of the first film. While Elias Koteas does not return for this film as vigilante Casey Jones, actors and characters who returned from the first film include Raymond Serra as Chief Sterns and Toshishiro Obata as Tatsu. Taking over the role of April O’Neil from Judith Hoag is Paige Turco and taking over the role of Shredder from James Saito is Francois Chau, while Kevin Clash returns to portray Master Splinter; Brian Tochi and Robbie Rist return to do the voices of Leonardo and Michelangelo, while Adam Carl voices Donatello and Laurie Faso voices Raphael. Michelan Sisti and Leif Tilden also return as the performers for Michelangelo and Donatello while the performers for Leonardo and Raphael are taken over by Mark Caso and Kenn Scott Troum. The role of new character Keno is portrayed by Ernie Reyes Jr, who previously worked as a stuntman on the first film, and the filmmakers liked working with him so much, that they created the role for him in this sequel. And rounding out the cast is David Warner as Professor Jordan Perry. Unlike the dark and grittiness direction of the Mirage comic books that the first film took, this one is given a more lighthearted, family friendly and comedic approach to be more like the ‘87 cartoon show. Due to parental complaints about the excessive violence in the first movie, the Turtles are rarely shown using their weapons in this film and instead mostly fight with their bare fists and feet. Also joining in on the fun of this film is rapper Vanilla Ice, who appears as himself during the finale of the film and brings along a new catchy song called Ninja Rap to the soundtrack. Go Ninja, Go Ninja Go! With a musical score composed once again by John Du Prez, the movie is nonstop fun and ninja action. While it was not as successful as the first movie, this sequel still proves to be a Cowabunga hit with TMNT fans worldwide. I give this Turtle-riffic sequel a hard ten rating. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/31/25 Full Review Stephen C Funny in 1 hour and 28 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The USA grossed over $78,700,000.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/18/25 Full Review Mourning K This movie is so ridiculous. They had the chance of making a great movie, but they didn't. This movie has corny jokes that are annoying and the turtles don't use there weapons EVER in the movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/03/25 Full Review Zach S. A classic kids movie. Vanilla ice is a welcome addition. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/17/25 Full Review Alexander T All of these movies are great, and this one is probably the best. It has a great plot and cool characters. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/23/25 Full Review Cameron L A Saturday morning, cartoon of a live action film is exactly what I was looking for in these kinds of films like this. The attitude and tone of this sequel of the last highly successful movie of its time isn’t too far fetched Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/24/25 Full Review Read all reviews
