Tell Them You Love Me explores the extraordinary story of Anna Stubblefield, an esteemed university professor who becomes embroiled in a controversial affair with Derrick Johnson, a non-verbal black man with cerebral palsy. Anna says she unlocked Derrick's mind from his body by teaching him to communicate using a keyboard. But when Derrick's family begin to question his miraculous transformation, and Anna's intentions, it would lead to a criminal trial that would challenge our perceptions of disability and the nature of consent. Through exclusive footage and interviews with those on both sides of the case, this feature documentary weaves a riveting and endlessly nuanced story about communication, race, and sex.

Beyond consent, disability and race there is space given to reflect upon the nature of language, the “white saviour” complex, the purpose of justice and what constitutes unconditional love. Go to Full Review

Nothing here could be considered a dull watch, and if it leaves the viewer thinking about how we, as a society, treat one another, it could very well be a lesson learned. Go to Full Review

Chris and Arianna K Sep 27 This movie was completely predictable. So slow. And tried to paint the obvious villain in a good light. Boooooooo See more Blair K @blairkelley Sep 19 I have not been able to stop thinking about this story since I watched it. I am still confused and have several unanswered questions. However, I do believe Anna was wrong and it is hard to hear about what happened to D-man. Was he actually able to communicate? I feel like Anna took the wrong approach in trying to improve his communication skills, there are better options out there for someone with D-man’s condition. I read that the facilitated communication method was extremely unreliable and there is a lack of evidence that it produces reliable results, is that why Anna chose that specific method? If he wasn’t able to communicate, why was he in classes, writing papers and reading books with someone who was not Anna? I feel like they set him up in court in the way they were trying to prove/ disprove his level of competency. I can not imagine how hard it was for the family when they thought he would be able to thoroughly communicate with them, just for all hope to be crushed and then go on to learn that he was taken advantage of. I hope the family is doing better today. See more Natasha H Feb 26 Firstly I feel for d-man massively. To be trapped inside your own body must be horrible. The family seem to pick and choose what fits their own narrative. He chose what to be called. So he remembers very well. His brother said he “can’t wait to kick back and have a beer” d-man replies as his brother said I like red wine. So he has the ability to choose what he does and doesn’t like and can clearly understand what is being said to him. The family are clearly loving and only want the best for him. But that being said they are extremely over baring and only seeing him for what the doctors say over even their own experience with him. I hope one day he’s allowed to find love ❤️ See more Azure B Jan 23 Wow. Didn't expect this movie to go this way. From all the reviews it looks like most people side with the family. I'm not so sure. According to the mother and the girlfriend... at one point the girlfriend asks him what he wanted to be called. He said D-Man. The mother then confirms that this was the name his previous teacher called him. That tells me he was able to communicate. Also, the mother put him on medication because he master bates??? So he does have sexual urges and obviously wants what all adult men want, but his Mom wants to be the only one and puts him on medication? IDK. I feel sorry for dude. See more Scott M @Skeeeeezo 08/01/2024 A fascinating story about a man without a voice and his ability, or inability to communicate - it depends who you ask. See more Kyrstin B 07/17/2024 I might be the first person who actually has cerebral palsy to review this documentary. Maybe not, but it definitely affected me more deeply and viscerally than most able-bodied viewers, I think. I would like to see more disabled people's opinions. I believe this story is about transference. While I absolutely think that Derrick deserves the right to a loving relationship just like anyone else, and that Anna may have believed she loved him, she was unfortunately in a position of power over him. I don't see it as very different from those stories of teachers taking advantage of students. Maybe if she hadn't been his ALREADY MARRIED TEACHER, this might have been more acceptable. I was very uncomfortable watching this, because I know that he is trapped in his own body as I am trapped in mine. I was also bothered that they didn't even TRY to get Derrick's perspective, and that his family considers masturbation a deviant behavior seemingly just because a disabled person is doing it. He will probably never have another shot at a romantic relationship, what do they expect him to do? Able-bodied people's tendency to infantilize those of us who struggle with what comes naturally to them is infuriating. This doc left me with a lot of uncomfortable questions.
