Rated 4/5 Stars •  Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Everybody, and frankly quite understandably so, falls in love with a dreamy-looking Takeshi Kaneshiro in Sylvia Chang's fine romantic drama Tempting Heart from 1999. But what initially plays like a cute puppy love story in the first half, turns into an emotionally responsive and surprisingly sullen meditation on time and lost opportunity in the latter half. Most regrettably, Chang also introduces a rather unneccessary film within a film-concept pretty early on, complicating things by having older versions of the lovestruck ones, engaging in mock-intelligent pieces of conversation about love and the loss of it. But, thanks to Sylvia Chang's sure hand at directing, the diffent pieces eventually fall into place, culminating in a beautifully bittersweet, if a bit saccharine, moment of regret. It wasn't bad, it's just that to me it looked like another sad love story with a love triangle, people who take weird decisions you don't really understand in order to make the story more complicated... I didn't like the structure too much, with the parallel stories, it did not serve the film very well in my opinion. Also, the actors did not really look credible as high school students (they're just too old, and the fake acne was quite funny). It does not really have any big flaws, I just didn't see anything particularly good in it.
