Pat Padua Washington Post The life of Tenshin may have been an exciting time for art, but you'd never know it from watching this movie. Rated: 1.5/4 Mar 10, 2016 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Wonderful film that tells a little known story the history of Japanese modern art Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Worth watching, definitely. Strong showing of Japanese culture in the early part of the 20th century as it was starting to be strongly affected, especially in art, by contact with Western traditions. It fascinated me to see in the early part of the film the western style furniture and clothing being worn, underscoring Tenshin's focus, the affect of the West on the nature of traditional Japanese art. The rhythm of the film, I suspect, will be difficult for most Westerners and maybe even for Japanese millennials. After the artists leave the Western influenced school and establish the new school, the pace is very measured and the set is minimalist but always beautiful. There is a lot of quiet between dialogue and you may want to sit away from the folks with big bags of popcorn or other crunchie munchies to get the best effect from this visit to the "old ways".
