What to Know

Critics Consensus

While it's nowhere near as addictive or fast-paced as the game, Tetris offers a fun, fizzy account of the story behind an 8-bit classic.

Audience Says

Even if it plays fast and loose with the true story behind the game, Tetris is tons of fun -- and Taron Egerton has never been better.

Stephen Romei The Australian The drawn-from-life drama Tetris is a bit like the video game it’s named after: slow to start but, once it warms up, a bit addictive. Rated: 3.5/5 Apr 15, 2023 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times Taron Egerton fits perfectly into story of the classic game’s origins. Rated: 3/4 Apr 3, 2023 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) Director Jon S Baird harnesses the graphic style and plinky plonk music of 80s computer games to amusing effect. Rated: 3/5 Apr 2, 2023 Full Review Calum Cooper Flick Feast Overall Tetris has a few glitches in its presentation, yet its unique approach to its subject matter and ambitious craft is to be commended. Rated: 3/5 Jul 17, 2024 Full Review Joonatan Itkonen Toisto.net Sometimes a good story is a good story, even if it’s not entirely true. In this case, looking past what the film itself calls American Sentimentalism, you’ll find not just a good story, but a great film about a perfect game. Even if it is embellished. Rated: 4/5 Jul 3, 2024 Full Review Tamma Moksha The Hindu While his moustache might need some getting used to, Taron Egerton is reliable in this chaotic cold-war thriller and you can count on him to keep you hooked. Aryan It contains TETRIS, it's the best movie of this century and instant classic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/27/23 Full Review Melanie Great acting, neat story. Would recommend! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/25/23 Full Review Luis G Masterpiece of a story-telling for the story of tetris! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/25 Full Review Al P Didn't grip me. 3 1/2 star because my partner enjoyed it Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/23/25 Full Review Tex S As a gamer since the age of 3, I managed to live through this saga. There were rumors, and limited information articles, that told pieces of the story. There were questions about the Tengen version of Tetris and why it was so different in appearance from Nintendo's. I was an adult when I heard the real story. Tetris tells the unbelievable and absolutely insane story of dealing with the communists in the 80's. Ignorance and naivety on the part of Hank Rogers, got him involved in one of the craziest business deals, with unfathomable results. My father, in his mid 80's still plays Tetris on his almost 40 year old GameBoy, every single day. He'll play through to completion. Set it down, and in a few hours, he'll pick it up and start playing it again. I may be fanboying a bit because I did get to meet Alexey Pajitnov once, and told him how his game still occasionally haunts my dreams. The movie even mentions that, and those 512 Million of us that have played it, understand completely. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/14/25 Full Review Miguel T Tetris is a solid film, not focusing so much on the game industry rather tahn on USRR, but that emane love for videogames in some really fun secuences such as the one set in the Nintendo office.
