Scott Foundas Variety An initially promising, but quickly disappointing retread of Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel's hugely influential horror classic. Apr 16, 2008 Full Review Jonathan Rosenbaum Chicago Reader 'Inspired by a true story' presumably adds to the sordid thrills; maybe we should look forward to entertainments about Nazis torturing children. Rated: 3.5/4 Jun 22, 2022 Full Review Joe Lipsett Horror Queers Podcast This stylish remake is as unfairly maligned as the original, especially when it comes to complaints of gore and torture. This take on Leatherface is filled with dread and several sequences are horrific, particularly Vogel's updated meat hook scene Apr 3, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Enrique P. So good!! This is one of those movies I actually prefer over the original. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/20/25 Full Review Shelby O On par with the original, drops the dark humor and goes for more gore. Worth a watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/12/25 Full Review Rowan C The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake was very good and I am relieved, because there have been a bunch of terrible movies in this franchise so far. This follows a similar story line compared to the very first move in 1974, and it all starts with 5 teenagers heading to Dallas, Texas for a concert. Their names are Erin (Jessica Biel), Pepper (Erica Leerhsen), Kemper (Eric Balfour), Andy (Mike Vogel) and Morgan (Jonathan Tucker). They were all driving until they saw a hitchhiker (Lauren German) and she seemed like she had been through something traumatic. She got into the car and begged them not to take her back to the “bad man”. She proceeded to take a gun that she had and she shot herself with it in the backseat of the van. Kemper frantically pulled over and they all got out of the car, very shocked at what just happened. They ended up going to a gas station run by the Hewitt family. There is a lady running this gas station named Luda May (Marietta Marich) and she was asked to call the sheriff. She called the sheriff and told them that the sheriff would meet them at the Old Crawford Mill. She also said if they didn't, it would take the sheriff 2 hours to get there. They all go to this mill where they see this rugged little boy Jedidiah (David Dorfman) and they seem very creeped out by him. He ends up running away, but he gives them fake directions to where the Sheriff lives since the Sheriff was not there yet. Erin and Kemper go to this house, and they run into one of the owners of the house, Old Monty (Terrance Evans). He lets Erin go in but when she doesn't come out soon, Kemper follows her in and gets knocked out by Leatherface (Andrew Bryniarski). Erin hears it but Old Monty was able to get her out of the house by gaslighting her that Kemper wasn’t in the house. While this was happening, Sheriff Hoyt (R. Lee Ermey) arrives and he is one suspicious looking cop. He starts weirdly touching the dead body and asks for some help from Monty to get her wrapped up. They get the dead girl in the back of his car, he takes the gun that was on her and then he drives off. Erin returns saying that she could not find Kemper and would not drive away without finding him first. Erin and Andy go look for Kemper back at the house while Pepper and Morgan stay back at the van. Erin distracts Old Monty while Andy sneaks into the house, and Andy ends up knocking something over in the house. This alerted Old Monty who told both of them that they are so dead, and he started beating his cane on the ground. Leatherface comes up behind them with a chainsaw and ends up catching Andy by slicing his leg off. Andy gets captured and thrown on one of the hooks in Leatherface’s lair. Erin returns urging the others that they need to go but Sheriff Hoyt returns again. He uses the excuse of them having weed for all of them to get on the floor. He takes Morgan into the car and Morgan tries to shoot him but the mag was empty. Hoyt arrests him and even smashes a glass bottle against his teeth for offering him his concert tickets. Hoyt tells his family that the two girls are at the old mill and this is when they were met with Leatherface. Leatherface kills Pepper with a chainsaw and Erin ends up running to this trailer in the middle of nowhere. She meets Henrietta (Heather Kafka) and the Tea Lady (Kathy Lamkin). They drugged Erin by tricking her and Erin realizes that they stole a baby from another family they tortured. Erin is now at the house and they throw her down into the basement, where she sees Andy. Andy begs her to take him out of his misery, and she sadly stabs him in the stomach so he could be at peace. Erin finds Morgan and Jedidiah actually helps them get out. They go on this huge chase scene with Leatherface until they have to hide. Leatherface finds Erin but Morgan rescues her, which leads to Morgan getting killed by Leatherface. There is another massive chasing scene here, in which Leatherface trips over a fence and cuts himself with his chainsaw. Later, Erin comes out of a locker and chops Leatherface’s arm off with a cleaver. Erin runs into a truck in the middle of the road where the driver named Big Rig Bob (Brad Leland) lets her in. He starts driving back towards the area of the gas station and she hops out when he is going in. Erin looks into the gas station where she sees Sheriff Hoyt, Luda May and Henrietta all around the baby. The Driver got Hoyt to look for her, but Erin already snuck in and took the baby. She sneaks into Sheriff Hoyt’s car, hotwires it and kills him by running him over many times. Erin escapes and at the last second, Leatherface appears by slicing a part of her car. She gets away safely and this is where the movie ends. It was also revealed in this movie that this is the Hewitt universe and not the Sawyer universe. Leatherface's real name in this movie is Thomas Hewitt, which is different from other films. Overall, everything is great about Leatherface in this movie and it isn’t corny like other films. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/21/25 Full Review Rafael S Excellent remake, I really liked it and I think it was a bit unfair at the time (one of the best remakes in my opinion) Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/08/25 Full Review Brian S Jessica Biel’s tank top may have gotten me in the door as a teen, but after rewatching, it’s a slick and surprisingly effective reimagining of raw terror, despite being nowhere near as cool and authentic as the original .. but what ever is?
