Simon T @Bucksplit 5d Everyone knows that Eric & Ern were at their best when they joined the BBC in the early seventies and swapped long-term gagsmiths Sid Green and Dick Hills for the brilliant Eddie Braben. Unfortunately they still had Green and Hills when they tried moving to films, and these are pretty dire. That Riviera Touch is better than The Intelligence Men, but it's still tiresomely unfunny. A crude mixture of 007 parody and Carry On sexism, it actually makes Eric Morecambe look desperate as he chases the non-existent laughs. They were better than this. There is a regular roll-out of hilarious moments including Eric accidentally issuing a parking ticket to the queen's car, Eric winning a fortune on the roulette wheel and Eric's failed attempts at playing beach volleyball in order to impress the beautiful Claudette. The scenery, the mystery of the stolen jewels and the disappearance of bodies through a secret trapdoor take second stage to the situational comedy and romantic scenes. A 1966 comedy classic! As it is, it's passable and reasonably entertaining but another draught of the script and a little more actual location filming in France wouldn't have gone amiss. The Two Are Fighting For The Affections Of Claudette, Who Starts To Use Them At First But Eventually Falls In Love With The Two. Not A Perfect Film But Filled With Plenty Of Retro Slapstick.
