What to Know

Critics Consensus

While it does represent a new foray into raunch for the normally PG-13 Sandler, That's My Boy finds him repeating himself to diminishing effect - and dragging Andy Samberg down with him.

Tim Grierson Deadspin Yet again Adam Sandler has taken a fairly clever concept for a broad comedy and just detonated it with some of the stupidest, most repetitive gags imaginable. Feb 12, 2013 Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times Warning: this film contains scenes of incest, masturbation, gerontophilia, statutory rape and Adam Sandler. Rated: 2/5 Sep 6, 2012 Full Review Ben Kenigsberg Time Out The basic joke keeps on giving and the sweetness of the parent-child bonding scenes plays well. Rated: 1.5/4.0 Sep 26, 2020 Full Review Micheal Compton Bowling Green Daily News Sandler continues to play the same idiot character he has done since "Billy Madison" and "Happy Gilmore," but the difference is this guy lacks any of the innocent charm that helped make those movies work. BRizz 2 That’s My Boy (2012) – starring Adam Sandler as Donny Berger and Andy Samberg as Todd Peterson – is, quite frankly, one of the worst films I’ve ever sat through. This movie is a complete mess from start to finish. The strip club scenes feature some of the most tragically trashy characters imaginable, and most of the supporting cast feels like they were just thrown in for shock value or crude laughs. It’s tasteless, loud, and ridiculous in all the worst ways. The plot? Adam Sandler plays Donny, a deadbeat dad who becomes famous for having a sexual relationship with his teacher (played by Eva Amurri, younger version / Susan Sarandon, older version), which results in her going to prison—and him being forced to raise their child. That child ends up weighing 400 pounds by the age of 12, only to grow up into a successful and fit adult, played by Andy Samberg. Years later, Donny reconnects with Todd right before his wedding, hoping to use the reunion to avoid going to jail by getting money from his now-successful son. It’s just nonsense after nonsense. Sandler’s character speaks in this obnoxious, exaggerated accent that’s honestly unbearable. It’s like someone dared him to be as irritating as possible for two hours, and he took it personally. I couldn’t wrap my head around how bad it sounded—or why nobody stopped it during filming. Then there’s Leighton Meester, who plays Jamie, Todd’s fiancée. Plot twist: she’s having an affair with her own biological brother. And somehow the movie plays it off like it’s just another gag. No emotional fallout, no consequences—just gross humor for shock value. It’s beyond disturbing. I’m starting to realize, after seeing more of Sandler’s films, that I really don’t enjoy his comedy style. The screaming, the bizarre voices, the over-the-top nonsense—it’s all just repulsive to me now. Sure, he has a few solid movies under his belt (Big Daddy, Uncut Gems, The Wedding Singer), but this one? This is bottom-of-the-barrel garbage. That’s My Boy is stupid, offensive, tone-deaf, and just plain awful. It’s a movie that tries way too hard to be edgy and ends up being downright unwatchable. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/06/25 Full Review Diego A. Overall you can’t say it’s a good movie but too some it’s a really nice treat. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/03/25 Full Review Benjamin P. Donny Berger. Classic. This is summer of 2012 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/02/25 Full Review Michael P Young boys being assaulted and taken advantage of by attractive older women is not funny. It’s grotesque how this is framed as it being a celebratory moment. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/27/25 Full Review Audience Member This movie is so fukking disgusting and hysterical and you’re not a die hard Happy Maddison fan you just simply don’t get it or maybe you take comedy way too seriously. Either way I laughed my ass off!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/22/25 Full Review Anna B Was it silly? Yes. Was it funny? Yes. Was it cringe? Yes. Unforgetabble? Yes...would I rewatch? Probably.
